Football returned Wednesday night as the Dallas Cowboys went into MetLife Stadium and handed the defending Super Bowl champion Giants a 24-17 loss.
Some quick takeaways from that game, with an Eagles slant.
Reaction in the Eagles locker room was almost identical from player to player when the question about replacement referees came up. There would be a telling smile followed by an involuntary groan, both indicating a nerve was struck. Michael Vick literally let out an, “Ahhh!” before conjuring up a politically correct response.
Jason Avant went through the same process, waited a beat, and chose to let his real feelings seep through the crack.
“This league is all about — our commissioner is all about — player safety,” said Avant. “And with the deal not being done, there’s a definite compromise, kind of an oxymoron so to speak, when it comes to player safety with the refs not being there. A lot of guys are kind of concerned about it. That’s a big deal for us as far as player safety.”
This afternoon, I posed a simple question to players in the Eagles locker room: Based on what you’ve seen, which teammate do you think is poised to have a really good year?
Selection was based simply on who was available. But it just so happened to be four defensive players and four offensive players. Here are their responses.
With national predictions rolling in fast and furious, it’s time to once again round up what people are saying about the Eagles.
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has stated publicly on two different occasions now that last season was unacceptable and a repeat performance would not be tolerated. On Thursday, during his annual state-of-the-team address, he said that he needs to see “substantial improvement” in 2012.
Michael Vick was asked what that means to him.
“It means he wants to see significant improvement,” said Vick with a laugh. “I didn’t need to hear that because I know exactly what we’re facing, what we want to accomplish this season. If that’s not the goal, then what is it?”
The fact that Eli Manning has quarterbacked two Super Bowl teams in the last two seasons is not lost on Jeffrey Lurie.
He has long appreciated Tom Brady and got an up-close view of the quarterback’s ability in Super Bowl XXXIX.
Aaron Rodgers? Drew Brees? Lurie called them “some of the greatest players ever to play football.”
It was a long way of getting to his point: If the Eagles are going to be a Super Bowl team this season, it will be on the back of Michael Vick.
Deadspin’s Drew Magary has spent the past month or so hilariously eviscerating every team in the NFL based on the premise that every team has […]
If you were looking for the one person who isn’t concerned about Michael Vick getting hurt this season, I think I’ve found him.
Rob Vito, CEO of Unequal Technologies, the company that has produced a custom-fit Kevlar vest for the Eagles quarterback to wear during games, thinks Vick will be just fine.
As Tim explained yesterday, Michael Vick is trying something new to protect his ribs.
Vick will wear a Kevlar vest made by Unequal Technologies, a company he endorses. From what he said, it sounds like Vick is trying to cover a greater area of his mid-section.
Compared to most of the Donovan McNabb-led teams, the Eagles are stacked at the skill positions on offense.
But how does the Birds’ talent compare to teams around the league?
Each summer, Michael Lombardi of NFL.com puts out his list of blue-chip and red-chip players. Click on the link for a full explanation, but here’s the basic version: Blue-chip players are among the top-five at their position, and red-chip players are among the top 10.
When first considering it, you’d think the Eagles would have a pretty good showing on the list, specifically on offense. But you’d be wrong.
