Looking to live on the Main Line without spending a ton of money to do it?

You might want to consider renting while you contemplate what you want to do in the long run.

Our foray into the rental listings on Zillow produced these five rental units at the current upper end of the market.

The good news is, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to rent a decent home on the Main Line. The most expensive of these homes rents for $4,350 per month, and the cheapest is a mere $2,400 per month. These rents get you some fairly spacious homes as well.

However: If what you want is the latest and greatest, or the biggest and best, in your price range, you might still want to consider buying instead. While these homes are all in at least good shape and have plenty of space, they either are smaller than homes with comparable monthly mortgage payments or have things like kitchens that could use some updating.

What’s that, you say? You don’t have the money saved up for the down payment yet, but you want to plant yourself on the Main Line real soon? Browse away, then.

100 Llanalew Rd. #9B, Haverford (above) | 4 beds, 2 full, 1 half baths, 2,200 square feet, $4,350/month. No pets.

This recently updated three-story townhome has a main floor with three distinct spaces in its open-plan layout: a modern kitchen with stone tile backsplash and stainless steel appliances, an attractive dining room and a two-story-high living room with fireplace. Upstairs, you’ll find a full-floor master suite on the second floor with a walk-in closet, stylish master bath and home office loft overlooking the living room. Three more bedrooms, a laundry and a full bath occupy the third floor. Friendly downtown Narberth is about a fifteen-minute walk away.

2 Booth Lane, Apt. 4, Haverford | 3 beds, 3 full, 1 half baths, 1,843 square feet, $3,400/month. Contact manager about pets.

This modern apartment has the three most important things about a piece of real estate going for it: Location, location, location. It’s right across Lancaster Avenue from the Haverford School and just a few blocks west of both Haverford College and Haverford’s town center and Regional Rail station. It also has some very nice features inside, including a reasonably up-to-date kitchen with tile-floored breakfast room, a spacious living room with fireplace and balcony, sparkling hardwood floors and new carpet, and dual closets and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom. It also comes with parking for two cars. When you consider the total package, we’d say this is a pretty good deal.

40 Old Lancaster Rd. #608, Merion Station | 3 beds, 2 full, 1 half baths, 2,449 square feet, $3,400/month. Contact agent about pets.

If the home above is a pretty good deal, then this unit in the Latchs Lane complex is a really good deal: You get 600 more square feet, a newer kitchen with more work space and its own back entrance for easier grocery delivery, more recently updated baths, and much nicer community amenities, including a gym, community room, and pool, for the same price per month. You also get a top-floor apartment with great views and a balcony big enough for outdoor dining and entertainment to boot. The bedroom wings are off the main entrance. Two of the bedrooms, including the master, have spacious walk-in closets (two of them in the master), and the third has a great view of Center City. If you’re affiliated with St. Joseph’s University, you couldn’t ask for a better location than this, and shopping along City Avenue is also close at hand.

425 Dudley Ave., Narberth | 3 beds, 2 full, 1 half baths, 1,980 square feet, $2,950/month. Cats and small dogs welcome.

This is the most up-to-date of the five homes in our roundup, having undergone a very recent renovation that gave it all-new appliances in its kitchen and updated bathrooms. The main floor features an open plan layout. The stairwell rises the full height of this twin home, and the master bedroom has dual closets, an en-suite bathroom and a balcony. There’s an attractive backyard and off-street parking as well. We suggest you leave your car at home, though, and take a pleasant stroll into downtown Narberth for shopping, dining and cinema.

249 Haverford Rd., Wynnewood | 3 beds, 2 full, 1 half baths, 2,659 square feet, $2,400/month. No pets.

Love Midcentury Modern style? This vintage 1952 rancher with a touch of Southwest flair offers you a beautifully preserved specimen of the style. To the right of the foyer, the main living room features large windows, a stone fireplace and a small recessed dry bar with built-in shelving. To the right you’ll find the dining room, which also gets plenty of light through its windows, and behind it is a spacious kitchen with original cabinetry and more recent appliances. The family room has dark wood wainscoting and trim, a larger semicircular bar and a stone-framed foldout door that leads to this home’s nicest feature: a solarium with a hot tub. Beyond it is a flagstone rear patio, and there’s also a two-car attached garage with inside access. The floors are new throughout this home, and the bathrooms have full tile. Both its roof and its climate control system were replaced within the last six years.

In addition to the rent, the tenant must also pay for a one-year AHS home warranty plus any deductibles.
