Yes, That’s 2002 Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes Studying at Penn Law

Former figure skating champ wants to study contracts.

Back in 2002, the come-from-nowhere tale of Sarah Hughes to win the ice skating gold medal at the Olympics was one of the biggest sports stories of the year. Remember this?

So where is Hughes now? Studying law at Penn, naturally.

AP reports that Hughes maintains a foot in the ice-skating world — she’s one of two figure skating representatives on the U.S. Olympic Committee — but at 30, she’s also ready to make her mark outside the sport.

“I left one crazy field for another,” she told the wire service.

Hughes said she managed to get away with anonymity on campus early on. That’s changed, but only a little.

“After a while, word started getting around,” she said, “but it wasn’t a big deal because it was a small class and we all knew each other. I wanted to make friends with people first.”
