Sunday night turned tragic in Voorhees when a man shot his mother and then himself inside an assisted living facility in the South Jersey town.

Police say that 62-year-old George Buller of Lumberton shot his mother, Andree Buller, 85, inside her room at Genesis HealthCare’s Voorhees Center on Evesham Road. The mother and son dined together inside the facility around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Police believe that he went out to his car after dinner and then returned to shoot his mother. As a staff member walked into the room, Buller shot himself. Police were called to the scene just before 5:45 p.m., and both were pronounced dead at 6:08 p.m.

No one else was injured in the incident. According to police, there was no one else in Andree Buller’s room at the time of the shooting. The facility went into lockdown immediately after shots rang out, and Voorhees deputy police chief Bill Donnelly later praised the staff for its handling of the situation.

George Buller visited his mother at the Voorhees Center previously, authorities say, and no information has been provided about the mother’s medical condition. The facility provides both short- and long-term care, severe Alzheimer’s care and hospice.

For over 50 years, Andree Buller lived in Haddonfield with her husband George, who passed away in 2009.
