Wellness: Ask the Experts: How Can I Avoid Seasonal Depression?

Answer from Philip Gehrman, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania

“Some researchers believe that the decrease in daylight hours over the winter months triggers a hibernation of sorts. Many people feel sluggish, have a desire to eat and sleep more, and often notice a change in mood. To avoid seasonal depression, take advantage of daylight that is available. Go for a walk on your lunch break. Plan outdoor activities on the weekends. Sit by a window whenever you can. Also, using a light-therapy box between when you wake up and when the sun rises will ease symptoms.”
