Watch: Philly Queer Poet’s Yikes-Worthy Message to Straight People

"Dear straight people. Who do you think you are?"

A few weeks ago, I posted about local poet and program director for the Philly Youth Poetry Movement Denice Frohman winning the prestigious Women of the World Poetry Slam in Minneapolis, and now some of the vids from the competition are slowly starting to surface. In this one, titled “Dear Straight People,” Frohman confronts those in the hetero population who are lagging when it comes to embracing the gay community. One of the most powerful moments happens around the 23-second mark: 

Dear straight people. You’re the reason we stay in the closet. You’re the reason we even have a closet. I don’t like closets, but you made the living room an unshared space and I’m feeling like a guest in my own house.
