Video: Philly Student Brings New Life to Old Harvey Milk Speech

The work shows just how ahead of his time Harvey Milk really was.

Philadelphia University interactive media and design major and part-time gay activist Gerard McGarity put together this great video that illustrates the famous “Somewhere in Des  Moines … ” speech Harvey Milk gave in California in 1978. McGarity says he chose that particular speech — which features Milk speaking about everything from the importance of electing gay officials to the threat of suicide in young gay people — because the prescient words are “just as valid to this day.” Plus, he says, “you don’t know where you are going if you don’t know where you came from.” Well said.
