Projecting The 53-Man Roster: Take 2

Philadelphia Eagles DE Phillip HuntThe Battle Royale between Tim and Sheil continues. Does Jaiquawn Jarrett make the cut after a bad game against the Steelers? And, with all the depth along the defensive front, who will be left off?

Eagles Wake-Up Call: What’s the No. 1 Concern?

Philadelphia Eagles offensive line coach Howard MuddBefore training camp started, my No. 1 concern for the Eagles was simple: Would the team’s plan at backup quarterback be good enough?

But the truth is, we won’t know the answer to that question unless (until?) Michael Vick gets injured and Mike Kafka (or perhaps Nick Foles) has to enter a regular-season game.

Now that camp’s over, though, a new concern has emerged: Will Demetress Bell be ready to go in Week 1 vs. the Browns?

Practice Observations: Fletcher Cox Can’t Hide

Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher CoxWhen you’re 6-foot-4 and weigh 298 pounds, it’s not easy to hide.

So while Fletcher Cox did his best to sneak into the Varsity House after this afternoon’s practice, the Eagles first-round pick ended up having to stop to answer a few questions.

“I almost got away,” he said.

Finding a Role For Harbor

Philadelphia Eagles TE Clay Harbor.About an hour after many of the other Eagles players had headed inside, tight end Clay Harbor finally strolled off the field at Lehigh.

He had finished the special-teams portion of practice and went through his usual routine afterwards.

“Get at least 50 catches in,” Harbor said. “I try to walk through some of the routes I know I’m going to see in the later practice. Just get used to catching the ball coming out of those breaks. It really helps a lot. Building habits, seeing the same ball over and over again, it just becomes second nature and you don’t even think about it anymore.”

Jason Babin Eyeing A Return

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Jason BabinHad a chance to catch up with Jason Babin on Sunday. The defensive end has been out since late July with a calf strain that was expected to sideline him for 2-3 weeks. We are now in that window, and it sounds like Babin is getting close to a return.

“I know when I’m 100 percent. I’m pretty in-tune with my body. Keep this progress up and I’m sure it will be sooner than later,” said Babin

Eagles Wake-Up Call: The Jason Kelce Lesson

Each morning during training camp, we’ll be bringing you the Eagles Wake-up Call with links and notes from Lehigh. Today, we cover the Birds’ competition at right tackle between Demetress Bell and King Dunlap, expectations for DeSean Jackson and everything you might have missed over the weekend.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: One Way To Help Vick

On Michael Vick’s second drop-back of the preseason, he was sacked by Steelers defensive tackle Steve McLendon, who threw him to the ground.

On his fifth drop-back, Vick felt pressure from his front side, stepped up in the pocket, let go of the ball and slammed his thumb against Jason Kelce’s helmet.

A reasonable question to ask is: Why was Vick so close to Kelce when he released the football?

Eagles Wake-Up Call: DeSean Honored To Play For Reid

Today, we cover the Andy Reid – DeSean Jackson relationship, Asante Samuel’s latest interview and the Eagles’ Super Bowl odds.

Eagles Practice Observations: Polk at fullback?

Philadelphia Eagles running back Chris Polk. It’s rare that a running back does something without the football in his hands that makes the crowd go crazy.

But let me introduce you to Chris Polk.

During this afternoon’s session, the undrafted free agent out of Washington sent cornerback Brandon Hughes flying on a blitz pickup that drew perhaps the loudest ovation of the day.

Castillo: CB Cliff Harris Still Learning

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan CastilloOne of the Eagles’ undrafted free agents who has a chance to make the team is cornerback Cliff Harris.

But since an NCAA rule prohibited Harris (Oregon) from participating in spring practices, he’s still playing catch-up.

“Cliff is a competitor,” defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said today. “He is still learning our system. The hard thing is that when you miss those OTAs, it’s hard, so he is just trying to get a complete understanding [of the defense]. In the classroom, he understands the scheme, but when it is going fast, I think that is the part in time he will get better and better at.”

‘Nickel Nnamdi’ Still Alive And Well

Call it a failed experiment if you will, but the idea of moving Nnamdi Asomugha around last season had some logic to it. With proven talents like Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie at your disposal, you can sell the notion of Asomugha as a “rover” to try and create matchup advantages.

This season it’s a tougher product to pedal because Samuel now plays for the Falcons. If you’re going to be moving Asomugha all over the field, who will be playing left cornerback in his absence?

The answer at the moment is Curtis Marsh.

Vick Taking His Cues From Steve Young

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael VickMichael Vick has dusted off some Steve Young film as he tries to develop into a more mature quarterback. Is it possible that he can take his game into the Hall-of-Famer’s stratosphere?

Asante: Things Went Downhill After I Left

From an entertainment standpoint, Asante Samuel’s presence at Lehigh is sorely missed.

Many of us had gotten used to his constant back-and-forth with wide receivers coach David Culley during one-on-one wide receiver/cornerback drills. And the way he led the defensive backs in a “Get money!” chant at the end of practice, while other positional groups went with more conventional phrases like “Hard work!”

And even though Samuel is now down in Atlanta with the Falcons, he’s going to get plenty of questions about his time here with the Birds.

Reid Delivers Long Injury Report

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidAs always, Andy Reid began his media session with the injuries.

About 1 minute and 28 seconds after he started, he had mentioned 14 different players, including nine potential starters. Here’s the full rundown.
