Eagles Wake-Up Call: Courting Chip Kelly

The Eagles’ lunch with Chip Kelly lasted a bit longer than your usual meet and greet at Chipotle.

On Friday evening, the Browns and Kelly were said to be close to a deal, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. But as we’ve discussed in this space, “close” and “done” are two different things – especially when it comes to the hiring of coaches.

So Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski took their best shot at Kelly in Arizona on Saturday, in an effort to lure him in as the next head coach.

Maclin Points To Lack Of Respect In Eagles Locker Room

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy MaclinIt was a time for reflection. LeSean McCoy looked visibly upset that he would no longer be playing for Andy Reid. As one of the building blocks going forward, he spoke up and said some of his teammates made too many excuses.

And then there was Jeremy Maclin, the former first-round pick who was in the same draft class as McCoy. Maclin’s career began with consecutive trips to the playoffs, but he’s never been part of a team that advanced past the first round.

“I think change needs to come from everywhere,” Maclin said, when asked if the Eagles’ problem had more to do with personnel or attitude. “I think we’re definitely a talented group of guys individually. I think the team unity probably wasn’t there this year. I think we’ve got to respect each other. If you respect somebody, you’re more willing to go out there and play for that person or play for a purpose. I think the lack of respect that maybe some guys have for other guys definitely hurt us.”

All-22: Getting Shady Loose

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.The locker stalls of LeSean McCoy and Stanley Havili are right next to each other at Lincoln Financial Field. Following the win over the Giants Sunday night, one reporter mentioned Havili’s name. McCoy, within earshot, said, “He was awesome.” To which Havili replied, “Shady the Giant killer!”

There was plenty of praise to go around after a dominant second half on the ground. Here is a look at the back-to-back big gainers early in the third quarter that provided the spark. As you’ll see, Havili was in fact awesome.

Eagles-Giants Pulls In Big Ratings

Sunday night’s Eagles-Giants tilt pulled in the highest overnight rating for a Week 4 NFL primetime game in 16 years, according to an NBC Sports press release.

The Eagles’ 19-17 win over New York registered a 15.6 overnight rating and a 25 share. That is the best in Week 4 since September of 1996, when the Colts and Dolphins fetched  a 19.1 rating on ABC.

Sunday night’s rating were 23 percent higher than last year’s Week 4 matchup between the Jets and Ravens.

These teams also met in Week 4 of the 2007 season on Sunday Night Football. That game drew a 10.8 rating and 17 share, down 44% from Sunday night’s game.

It’s Official: Nicks Out For Giants

On Friday, the Giants listed wide receiver Hakeem Nicks as doubtful. Today, they’ve downgraded him to out. Nicks will not travel with the team to Philadelphia.

Nicks is probably the best receiver in the division, so it goes without saying that this is a big break for the Eagles. Taking his place will be Ramses Barden, the 6-foot-6 target who caught nine balls on 10 targets for 138 yards last week against the Panthers.

Tuck: We Don’t Forget What McNabb, Jackson Did

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean JacksonThe fun part about the Eagles-Giants rivalry is that the players seem to genuinely dislike each other.

With players often switching teams and sharing agents, you don’t see a lot of that in sports anymore.

Yesterday, we wrote about the LeSean McCoyOsi Umenyiora ongoing back-and-forth. And now, defensive lineman Justin Tuck has offered his opinion on some past Eagles-Giants moments that still irk him.

Light Workload Leaves McCoy Shaking His Head

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.LeSean McCoy shook his head as the question came his way, undoubtedly frustrated by his light workload in Arizona Sunday.

You are considered by many to be a top three back in this league. Only five running plays were called in the first half. What gives?

“Um,” said McCoy, getting his politically-correct response in order. “Sometimes it goes like that. Who knows? If we got more carries or…I don’t live like that. I just go with the plays that are drawn up for us. We just got to do better, man. Simple as that.”

Instant Observations: Cardinals 27, Eagles 6

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid. Here are my instant observations from the Eagles’ 27-6 loss to the Cardinals.

The State Of the Eagles’ Secondary

Philadelphia Eagles CB Brandon Boykin. Here’s a player-by-player look at the Eagles’ secondary, heading into Sunday afternoon’s game against the Cardinals. Note that the cornerback target numbers come from having charted opponents’ throws with the coach’s tape.

Jeremy Maclin Ruled Out For Cardinals Game

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy MaclinJeremy Maclin did not practice Friday and is listed as out for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

King Dunlap and Riley Cooper are also out. Everyone else practiced and should be ready to go, per Andy Reid.

Maclin re-injured his hip against the Ravens last week. He practiced in a limited capacity Thursday but shut it down on Friday.

By the sounds of it, rookie Damaris Johnson has been bumped up to take Maclin’s place.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: The Nnamdi-Fitzgerald Showdown

Look at Larry Fitzgerald‘s gaudy stat line from last year’s game against the Eagles — seven grabs, 146 yards, two touchdowns — and it might […]

Cullen Jenkins Fined For Unnecessary Roughness

Cullen Jenkins said he’s been fined $7,875 by the NFL for unnecessary roughness against the Ravens.

The flag came in the first quarter came after Vonta Leach‘s five-yard touchdown run, as he mixed it up in the end zone with a Ravens defender. It was just one example of the chippiness between the Eagles and Ravens Sunday.

The prime example was the dust-up between DeSean Jackson and Cary Williams, where the two came to blows. Jackson hinted that he was slapped in the wallet as well.  “Probably did, but that’s my personal business,” he said.

Kevin Kolb Addresses Philly Media

This Sunday’s game in Arizona is richer than anticipated when it comes to storylines. Kolb not only took over as the Cardinals starter but is playing fairly well and for a winning team. There are only four 2-0 teams in the conference, and the Eagles and Cardinals are two of them.

The former second-round pick out of Houston gets to face his old team in a meaningful game, going up against the man who took his job.

“I’ve tried to prepare myself a little bit to make sure I’m not too excited, too hyped,” said Kolb, “because obviously as a QB you have to be settled in. But I don’t know, I”ve never played a team that I’ve played for before. Obviously I have a lot of respect for those guys, coaching staff and players, and think very highly of them.”
