When evaluating the state of the Eagles’ offensive line right now, it’s important to manage expectations.
A couple weeks ago, the coaches approached the Cardinals game assuming the offense would be just fine operating as it usually does. They tried little things to help Demetress Bell and Dallas Reynolds, who were making their first starts of the season. But overall, Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg believed this offense could still score points by hitting on big plays down the field in the passing game.
After a 27-6 loss, though, it appears they’ve made some significant changes the past two weeks.

Here’s a look at snap counts for the Eagles during their Week 5 loss against the Steelers. We’ll go position-by-position.
By this point last year, the Eagles’ defense already had 16 sacks. Through five games this season, they have seven.
On Sunday against the Steelers, Ben Roethlisberger did not go down once. The Eagles certainly aren’t accustomed to coming up empty, especially since defensive line coach Jim Washburn joined the staff. At least not until the last two weeks.
Ben Roethlisberger entered the game with a pristine 145.1 quarterback rating on third down. It is when he is at his best, and it proved true again Sunday. Especially late.
There were two key third-down conversions on Pittsburgh’s game-winning drive. The first was a 20-yard completion to Antonio Brown on a 3rd-and-12 from the Pittsburgh 18. The second was a seven-yard out to Emmanuel Sanders on 3rd-and-4 at the Philadelphia 38-yard line that put the Steelers in field goal range. Moments later, Shaun Suisham booted a 34-yard field goal as time expired to win it for Pittsburgh.
Andy Reid and Michael Vick acknowledged that the turnovers were an issue again against the Steelers, but neither seemed overly concerned.
“He didn’t want to come in and fumble the ball,” Reid said. “That’s not what he did. I mean, he was trying to make plays and they hit the ball, they knocked it out.”
Vick fumbled on consecutive possessions in the first half. On first-and-goal from the Steelers’ 3, the Eagles called a quarterback draw, but safety Ryan Clark knocked the ball out.
Here are my observations from the Eagles’ 16-14 loss to the Steelers Sunday afternoon.
