Coaching Buzz: Getting To Know Gus Bradley

With Chip Kelly returning to Oregon and Bill O’Brien headed back to Penn State, the Eagles are expected to take a look at several assistants from the NFL ranks this week.

One of those guys is Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. Seattle’s defense held a hobbled Robert Griffin III and the Redskins to 14 points in Sunday’s victory. During the regular season, the Seahawks finished first in scoring defense (15.3 PPG) and fourth in Football Outsiders’ rankings.

Bradley’s been Seattle’s defensive coordinator for four seasons. But would he be a good candidate?

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Chip Won’t Commit

Chip Kelly was the story.

There is no name this side of Jon Gruden that would have stirred imaginations and debate quite like the Oregon coach. The Lehigh stands would have been overflowing with fans dying to get  an up-close look at this new breed of football. Debate would rage over whether he could thrive in this environment, on this level. Kelly and his Eagles would be talked about across the league.

As we now know, Kelly chose the Ducks over the Birds Sunday, and this will not come to pass. And maybe that’s OK.

Clearing Up the Vick-Kelly Speculation

As the process continues, there’s been a lot of talk about a potential Chip Kelly-Michael Vick connection. But we need to clarify a few points about that discussion.

Let’s start with what Vick wants. Some have speculated that he yearns to play for Kelly and has anxiously been awaiting to find out where the Oregon coach lands. These reports surfaced a couple weeks ago, so Tim asked Vick about them.

Eagles Off To Denver; Browns Flying Home Without Chip

The Eagles and Browns are leaving the desert, and neither has Chip Kelly on the plane with them.

Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski are off to Denver to meet with Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Their  lunch with Kelly spilled will into the night Saturday, but the sides parted without reaching any kind of agreement.

The Browns also left empty-handed.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Courting Chip Kelly

The Eagles’ lunch with Chip Kelly lasted a bit longer than your usual meet and greet at Chipotle.

On Friday evening, the Browns and Kelly were said to be close to a deal, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. But as we’ve discussed in this space, “close” and “done” are two different things – especially when it comes to the hiring of coaches.

So Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski took their best shot at Kelly in Arizona on Saturday, in an effort to lure him in as the next head coach.

Jay Gruden On Eagles’ Radar

The Eagles have requested permission to interview Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, Tim McManus has confirmed.

Gruden has been with Cincinnati the past two seasons. He’s done a nice job of developing young talent – specifically quarterback Andy Dalton. A second-round pick in 2011, Dalton threw 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as a rookie. His numbers are up across the board this year, as Dalton completed 62.3 percent of his passes with 27 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Eagles To Interview Kelly, Marrone

The Eagles will interview Oregon’s Chip Kelly and Syracuse’s Doug Marrone in Arizona, a source tells Tim McManus.

The team released a brief statement Saturday morning about their coaching search:

“The Eagles are committed to finding the right fit for head coach and are heading to Arizona now to kick off a week of interviews with a variety of candidates including Mike McCoy, Bruce Arians and Gus Bradley.”

Despite an NFL Network report last night that said Kelly and the Cleveland Browns were close to a deal, the Eagles will still have a shot.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Overconfident, Or Part Of the Plan?

Jeffrey Lurie offered this opinion of his team at Monday’s press conference:

“I’m very confident that this is the most attractive place for a head coach to work in the National Football League.”

Right now, it’s at least fair to ask if this is even the most attractive destination out of the six teams that currently have a head coaching vacancy.
