Report: Trent Cole Recovering From Hand Surgery

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Trent ColeTrent Cole had hand surgery this week and could be sidelined for some of the Eagles’ spring activities, according to a report.

Mike Garafolo of USA Today says that the defensive end has been dealing with a hand issue for over a year, which could help explain his dip in production last season.

Report: Eagles Add Veteran DB Coach Lovett

The final remaining hole on the Eagles’ coaching staff has been filled, according to a report.

Sources tell CoachingSearch.com that Chip Kelly has hired defensive backs coach John Lovett. Lovett spent last season coaching Texas Tech’s DBs. He moved on to Cincinnati with Tommy Tuberville in the offseason, but will never coach a game there.

His only NFL coaching experience came with the Jets as defensive quality control coach in 1984, but Lovett has been all over the college map, having served as defensive coordinator at Miami, Bowling Green, Clemson, Auburn, Maine and Cincinnati. He has also coached at Ole Miss, UNLV, Brown and North Carolina.

Chip Kelly has tabbed Browns linebackers coach Billy Davis to be his defensive coordinator, according to a league source.

Geoff Mosher of CSN Philly was first to report the hire.

Davis has been the linebackers coach in Cleveland since 2011. Prior to that he served as the defensive coordinator in Arizona (2009-10) and San Francisco (2005-06). His NFL coaching resume dates back to 1992, starting out as a defensive assistant in Pittsburgh.

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.It was almost as if Chip Kelly took offense.

The new Eagles’ head coach was meeting with a group of writers on the day he was introduced at the Novacare Complex. The question posed to him was straightforward: Have you ever had a conventional drop-back quarterback?

“Yeah, a kid I had at New Hampshire, Ricky Santos, threw for 123 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in four years,” Kelly said. “So we threw the heck out of the ball.”

It was clear he had addressed this type of question before.

Eagles Sign DE/OLB McCoy, Release Demetress Bell

The Eagles announced today that they’ve signed DE/OLB Chris McCoy and released Demetress Bell.

McCoy spent the last two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL. He had three sacks and 29 tackles in 2012, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in August.

McCoy (6-3, 261) played his college ball at Middle Tennessee State and was a seventh-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2010.
