Report: Eagles Offered Coaching Job To Kevin Sumlin

Before they landed Chip Kelly, the Eagles offered their head-coaching job to Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin, according to a report.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Evan Mathis Back In the Mix

Well, this was supposed to be a positive blog post about the Eagles’ offensive line. Then word of Jason Peters‘ arrest for drag racing and  resisting came down last night, and suddenly that didn’t quite seem appropriate.

But if you’re looking for a reason to be optimistic, shift your focus away from the Pro Bowl tackle and toward Pro Bowl hopeful Evan Mathis.

The 31-year-old had minor surgery on his ankle this offseason and the expectation was that he wouldn’t be on the field again until training camp. But during last week’s minicamp, he was back in the mix.

Three Things We Learned About the Eagles’ Offense

From two tight end sets to the state of the offensive line to the quarterback competition, here are three things we learned about the Eagles’ offense this spring.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: ‘Everything’s Open’ For Earl Wolff

When mini-camp was wrapping up last week, Eagles assistant coaches John Lovett and Todd Lyght had a message for the team’s safeties.

“Everything’s open,” said rookie Earl Wolff. “Things are not going to be solidified until we put the pads on and everybody really shows what they can do.”

A fifth-round pick in April’s draft, that was just what Wolff wanted to hear. Nate Allen and Patrick Chung saw the most action with the first team this spring, but Wolff began to mix in with the starters last week.

Projected Depth Chart: Eagles’ Offense

We went over the defense yesterday.

Here is the projected depth chart for the Eagles’ offense, based on what we saw during spring practices. Explanations below.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: QB Controversy Inevitable With Vick

Chip Kelly will spend part of his first training camp dealing with a quarterback controversy. It’s inevitable when a player like Michael Vick ends up in a position like this.

Projected Depth Chart: Eagles’ Defense

Chip Kelly has made it clear that he has no interest in setting the depth chart until the pads come on in late July and he can draw some informed conclusions.

While it’s true that players rotated in and out at times during practices, there still were loosely defined first, second and third teams for the most part.

Keeping that in mind, here’s my version of the depth chart, based on what I saw during spring practices. This is the ultimate “take it with a grain of salt” exercise. Spots will be determined this summer, and a lot can change between now and the Week 1 matchup in D.C. against the Redskins.

But this should give you some idea of where things currently stand. We’ll do the defense today and the offense tomorrow. Explanations below.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Kelly On the Read Option

During Chip Kelly’s final media session last week, a reporter posed the following question:

There’s always been talk about whether the option will work in the NFL. You seem to be running quite a bit of it. Is that a fallacy…?

Kelly interrupted. “Is it a fallacy that we run quite a bit of it?” he said. “Yes.”

Eagles Unveil $125 Million Plan For the Linc

The Eagles have released the details of the $125 million renovation already underway at Lincoln Financial Field.

The 10-year-old stadium is undergoing a significant make-over in an effort to enhance the fans’ gameday experience.

“We have had discussions with season-ticket holders over the past couple of seasons to find out what was important to them,” said team president Don Smolenski. “We listened and developed a plan of action. The revitalization of Lincoln Financial Field that will take place over the next two years is a direct result of those conversations.”

Weekend Reading: Chip Kelly And Samurai Flags

Here’s the back-story of how Chip Kelly came up with the idea for the fly-swatter-like contraptions to simulate 6-foot-4 defensive linemen during practices.

What They’re Saying About the Eagles

Chip Kelly had better be careful, says one national writer. Here’s a roundup of what they’re saying about the Eagles this week.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: ‘You Can’t Fake Football’

Summer break. A much-needed respite from the grind that will allow the players to recharge and come into training camp fresh and ready for the season. Right, Coach?

“I don’t think that,” said Chip Kelly. “I’d be here every day if I could.”

Chances are Kelly will be at the NovaCare just about every day leading up to camp, but the veterans don’t officially report back until July 25.

If Kelly had to give his team a grade following OTAs and minicamp, it would undoubtedly be an incomplete. He has mentioned  on numerous occasions that it would be unfair to create a depth chart at this point before the players put the pads on. Kelly noted that in college teams are actually allotted more practices in the spring, and you’re allowed to hit. You can make evaluations in that environment, but few in this one.

Running Diary: Eagles Practice Observations

One last spring practice for the Eagles today. Here’s a running diary with observations.

Michael Vick On Splitting Reps: ‘It’s Tough’

The Eagles’ three-day minicamp is over, the offseason program is a wrap, and the quarterback picture remains out of focus.

The first-team reps have been split pretty evenly between Michael Vick and Nick Foles since OTAs kicked off a few weeks back, and by the looks of it, the QB competition will continue through training camp.

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio asked Vick as he was coming off the field Thursday: “Are you cool sharing time with the first team offense?”

“I mean it’s tough,” said Vick, per  Paolantonio. “I feel like I have to be a professional and put my commitments and emotions to the side, and just continue to work better. But it’s hard. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t, but that’s just what I have to deal with.”
