Coaching Buzz: ‘A Good Chance’ Eagles Land Jon Gruden?

When the idea of Andy Reid being fired became realistic earlier this season, there was one name that was discussed among Eagles fans more than any other: Jon Gruden.

As the weeks have gone by, the attention has turned to others like Oregon’s Chip Kelly, Denver’s Mike McCoy and so on.

But less than 24 hours before Black Monday, Gruden’s name has resurfaced.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: With Andy, Locals Know Best

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidThe national media has been singing Andy Reid‘s praises so loudly in recent weeks, you can’t help but think they are overcompensating for what they feel is a lack of appreciation for the head coach here in Philadelphia.

The Eagles fan base has been told over and over to be careful what they wish for, because they will never find a coach as good as Reid again.

‘Business As Usual’

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid.If Andy Reid is fired before New Year’s as many expect, the players will be getting very short notice.

According to multiple player sources, Reid had not addressed his future with the team as of early Saturday afternoon. Even as  they began their trip north to take on the Giants, there was no message.

Cosell on Foles: ‘Not Blown Away By Anything’

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles. Now that Nick Foles has made his final start of the 2012 season, the Eagles will have to evaluate what they’ve seen from the rookie and figure out what direction they want to go in at quarterback in the coming months.

As I’ve written in the past, I think the plan should be to develop Foles, while also looking for other options in the draft, via free agency, trades, etc.

Greg Cosell of NFL Films (whose opinion holds much more weight than mine) seems to agree. He spent some time talking about Foles during this week’s podcast with Adam Caplan.

“I’ve watched every game of Foles really closely,” Cosell said. “I think there’s been some steady improvement, some incremental improvement, but I must admit, I’m not blown away by anything. I don’t think there’s a lot of pop in his arm, and I think when you watch him throw live… you probably say his arm is pretty strong. But I don’t think he plays that way, and that concerns me.”

What They’re Saying About the Eagles

Reid: No Discussions With Lurie This Week

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidAndy Reid was asked Friday — following what could be his last practice as head coach of the Eagles — if Jeffrey Lurie has talked to him this week about what his intentions are with the coaching situation.

“No. No, we haven’t talked,” Reid replied.

As much as Reid and the players are trying to keep the conversation on the Giants, it inevitably floats to what happens when time runs off the clock Sunday. Even if it’s not with the Eagles, does Reid definitely intend to coach next year?

“I don’t know what I’d do without the media,” said Reid, fitting a joke into the uncomfortable gathering inside the practice bubble. “That’s what I want to do…I do want to coach, yeah.”

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid. Here are 10 thoughts on a variety of Eagles topics, including this weekend’s matchup, draft positioning, potential head-coaching candidates and Andy Reid’s future.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: ‘You Always Walk the Plank’

Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach Todd Bowles.Jerry Glanville taught us that NFL stands for “Not For Long,” and everyone who signs up for the lifestyle knows it.

If you’re a coach, you’re going to get fired. If you’re lucky you’ll get another gig in another city, and you’ll move your family there and hope the stay is long enough to grow some roots. But it probably won’t be.

Given the transient nature of the profession, it is understandable that a coach would insulate himself and zero in only on the Sunday in front of him until he is told that there will be no more Sundays with his current team.
