<em>Abbott Elementary</em> x <em>It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia</em>

We weren’t sure how the pretty PG educators of Abbott Elementary would mesh with the rather raunchy gang from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but they did, hilariously so. While we saw a more family-friendly version of the group in winter’s Abbott episode (like Charlie learning to read a children’s bird book), summer’s Sunny episode featured a spicier side of Abbott’s faculty that we hope to see more of. Brad Ingelsby and <em>Mare of Easttown</em>

The appeal of Mare of Easttown (the wild success of which landed Berwyn-native showrunner Inglesby a three-year HBO deal) transcends Kate Winslet and Jean Smart talking in our peculiar patois. While Mare was yet another detective series centered on a dead teenage girl, it was the only one the whole world was glued to this summer. We loved it for more than the accent work, but it’s also hard to overstate how validating it was to hear Winslet’s Mare utter, of the wet cast on her wrist, “Et arready etches like crazy en et smells like shet.” Read More »

Dispatches from Elsewhere

Look, we love Rocky, but there comes a time in every city’s life when it needs to diversify its film reel. Jason Segel’s Dispatches From Elsewhere, with its sultry montages from Rittenhouse and Fishtown and South Philly, helped us do just that, at a time when we couldn’t actually experience our city because of lockdown. Segel may have chosen Philly over other cities in part because of tax incentives, but we’re tickled by the results, regardless. Read More »
