Here at Be Well Philly, we’re all about fitness (obviously), self-care (duh), and Philadelphia as a whole, so we were pretty stoked when we caught wind that there’s a new publication — a yoga zine — covering all of those things, and more, in one handy package. Today, we’re happy to introduce you to Thrashey, a yoga zine created by local yoga instructor Ashley Tryba.

First of all, what the heck is a zine? Well, it’s basically a small-circulation, self-published booklet. After being asked for years by friends in touring bands to create a yoga zine to bring with them and distribute on the road, Tryba says she finally decided to take the plunge during her advanced yoga teacher training at Three Queens Yoga.

Tryba and her classmates were assigned an open-ended project that encouraged them to do something yoga-related that will impact a larger community — perhaps by combining that mission with something they’ve always wanted to do. And just like that, the Thrashey zine was born, covering everything from yoga alignment tips to local art. Tryba says she plans to release subsequent issues quarterly.

On Friday, September 21, the very first edition of the Thrashey zine will be celebrated at a launch party at Head House Square. The release party will kick off at 6 p.m. with a free, hour-long BYO-mat, alignment-based yoga class followed by complimentary Quaker City Shrubs. Attendees will also have the chance to pick up copies of the Thrashey yoga zine, plus shop other vendors slinging vintage wears, healing jewelry, and more.

If you want to score an issue of Thrashey but can’t make it to the release party, there are plenty of local spots to pick it up including Three Queens Yoga, on Tryba’s website, in-store at Beautiful World Syndicate and many other independent retailers.

Head House Square is located at 200 Lombard Street.
