Participants lined up for the 2017 Ride for the River — a scenic Schuylkill River bike ride.

If you love beer, biking, and the Schuylkill River Trail — not necessarily in that order — then there’s an event coming up later this month that’s totally up your alley. Ride for the River, in its third year, aims to draw attention to the beauty of the Schuylkill River Trail while raising funds to improve it — creating a scenic Schuylkill River bike ride for a good cause. Plus, there’s free beer, food and live music to celebrate. Who’s ready to party for the river?

Ride for the River will be taking place on Saturday, September 29 and will benefit the Schuylkill River Heritage Area, which handles the Berks and Schuylkill Counties portion of the SRT. That said, Ride for the River will be taking place outside of the city — on a portion of the trail that may be foreign to some city dwellers, between Pottstown and Reading.

The Ride challenges folks to clock serious miles — as in, between 16 and 44 miles — to raise money for maintaining and improving the trail. There are two ride length options, the first is 16 miles, which will depart from Sly Fox Brewery at 10 a.m. and head to the Union Township Recreation Area and back on the SRT. Those who opt for the 40-mile ride will depart from Sly Fox at 9 a.m. and head to Reading Riverfront Park via the SRT and back. Both groups have the option to tack on an additional four miles total in the form a hill climb — a new challenge in this year’s ride. It’s worth noting that both groups will need to complete a short five-mile road stint between the trail and the brewery.

Back at the finish line, Sly Fox, the Can Jam Festival will be popping off. Here, there will be eight hours of free live music performed by local talent and a huge KanJam (a frisbee game) festival, all going down in the brewery’s adjoining pastures.

Donating your time and the $45 registration fee comes with serious perks: Riders will be given vouchers for free food and one free Sly Fox beer at Can Jam, fully stocked rest stops during the ride, and complimentary pre-ride bike safety checks. Register for Ride for the River here.

Sly Fox Brewing Company is located at 331 Circle of Progress Drive in Pottstown.
