This May, Media and Manayunk will host the inaugural events of the 5280 Race Series, chip-timed one-mile road races through both downtown centers.

“These races provide everyone with a chance to race, from your elite runner to the newly introduced elementary kid runner,” says Jeff Long, president of Pattison Sports Group, the Thornton-based event firm running the series. “Both races will have a competitive and fun vibe with a lot going on.”

The series was created as a fundraising opportunity for Pattison’s nonprofit, Healthy Kids Running Series, an organization that encourages kids to get active through a positive introduction to running. The Manayunk event has a race just for kids, and 20 percent of revenues from both races will go to Healthy Kids.

The Media race on Saturday, May 9th, starts in front of the Delaware County Courthouse and ends at Veterans Square.

The Manayunk race on May 16th heads straight down Main Street. It’s also pairing up with Manayunk’s PLAY festival, so at the finish line you’ll find live performances and a day full of outdoor recreation activities, like kayaking, dragonboating, fishing, hiking and biking.

Both races offer cash prizes for top finishers, and the first 500 registrants will get tech t-shirts. Early bird registration for both events is set at $20; it tiers to $25 closer to race day.
