The First Wintry Mix of the Year Is Coming to Philly

What will likely be an ugly, slushy mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow is still expected to hit our area on Thursday — just a little later than expected.

It’s winter, people, even if not officially: The temperature has dropped, it now gets dark before one leaves the office, and the first wintry mix of the year is in the morning forecast.

That’s right: The National Weather Service has declared a winter weather advisory for our area between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday. Prepare yourselves.

This year’s first ugly mix of sleet, snow and freezing rain is coming a little later than expected: It was originally forecast to hit our area during or around the morning commute. Forecasters say we can still expect the winter slush to visit — but it will more likely come in the early or mid afternoon.

It’s surely nothing to panic about: We’re expected to get less than half an inch of snow, if anything. Still, the National Weather Service warns commuters to expect possible slippery roads and limited visibility during precipitation, and to use extra caution while driving.

Around 2 p.m., the wintry mix is expected change completely to rain, which could be heavy at times. So enjoy the little bit of snow/sleet/slush early in the day while you can. We hope it’s at least a little pretty. If not, at least get some pho or something to make you feel all warm inside.
