South Philly meat lovers have another reason to rejoice today: Primal Supply Meats, the whole-animal butcher shop run by sustainable meat maven Heather Thomason, softly opens tomorrow at 1540 East Passyunk Avenue.

While Thomason and her crew are still putting a few final touches in place, they’ll open the butcher shop from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday, April 28th and 29th — just in time for Sunday’s Flavors of the Avenue festival.

“We’re so excited to open our doors to the neighborhood,” said Thomason, who was head butcher at Kensington Quarters before striking out on her own. “Personally, it’s going to be a rush to get back to cutting and selling behind the case in my own butcher shop.”

Initially, Primal Supply sold meat via farmers’ markets and its CSA-style Butcher’s Club program, both of which will continue.

In addition to fresh, pasture-raised meats sourced from local farms and fresh cut at the shop, Primal Supply’s retail space will offer a selection of fruits and veggies from Riverwards Produce, artisan cheeses from makers like Birchrun Hills Farm and Valley Milkhouse, loaves from Philly Bread and Lost Bread Co., and other local pantry goods from producers like Keepwell Vinegar, Soom Foods tahini, and Three Springs Fruit Farm.

The shop will be open on Saturday and Sunday only for the next few weeks, with a grand opening and regular hours anticipated to start around mid-May.
