The classic BYOB dining room gets more thought here — small artistic touches on the white-linened tables, high-quality wine ware, and dazzlingly coordinated servers who swivel and shimmy smoothly through the crowd with chef Charles Roman’s carefully plated dishes. And his attention to the seafood-centric menu — particularly bouillabaisse — is as intense.

The food here is mediocre at best, the service is good, but I felt like a sardine jammed into the place. Won't be going back.

I was part of a group dinner and the Maitre d' who stated he was the owner of the restaurant was very rude to us. As mentioned, the place is small and noise travels, so if they want everyone quiet -- don't take group reservations. The Maitre d' who turned out to be the general manager, rudely told us we were too loud and it bothered his customers (as if we were not customers). Then he threatened to kick one of our members out because they said shhh as he (GM) passed our table. You have got to be kidding.
I cannot believe Blackfish gets such great reviews with this type of unprofessional service.

Blackfish does not deserve such lofty position in restaurant ranking. To begin with there is no convenient parking. Street only. No valet. The restaurant is smallish and tight. Acoustics are terrible. You easily hear the conversations around you. Service was inattentive. They tried to remove my first course twice before I even took a bite! The waiter took our order and returned only once. It was my birthday, they knew it, but there was no acknowledgment. Four of the five courses on the tasting menu were tasty and fresh, but portions are very small. The bone marrow was like congealed fat and unappetizing. For good bone marrow go to Bibou BYOB. The crusty bread was burnt. I asked if they thought it was burnt and they said it is grilled and sometimes comes out "darker". It was burnt black. I was not full when I left the restaurant and for two of us the cost was approximately $200 with tip (15%). Philadelphia Magazine should re-evaluate this restaurant. With all due respect, there is no way this is the #1 restaurant in Philly.

I have worked in the restaurant industry in the past, and I must say I find the honesty of Blackfish refreshing. I have worked in fine dining and I know what it is like to have a 4 table section that can only be sat once during the dinner rush because diners would rather talk all night than do what they came in to do: dine. I did not find the staff of Blackfish rude; instead, I was happy to hear their honest explanation of why tables are reserved for 2 hours only. There is no need for a meal to take more than 2 hours from start to finish, even with 3 courses and dessert/coffee. I am reading these other reviews and it makes me sad to see how selfish people are. They show up over a half hour late for their reservations, sit at a table talking for 30 minutes without even thinking about ordering, and do not take into consideration that these restaurants are only able to make a profit by selling food and turning over tables. That is not even taking into consideration that servers work almost solely off of tips which can only be generated by selling food to tables and by having more customers in general. I thought the food was delicious, and the service was efficient and friendly. And after I was done dining, I paid my bill and left. I was not ready to call it a night, so I went to a nearby bar (which there are several to choose from) where I could continue my night without inconveniencing the staff of Blackfish. I wish people would just realize that the restaurant industry shouldn't be about sucking up to patrons for 3+ hours and should more about providing excellent food (which Blackfish did).

We were celebrating a special occasion we were six people and we were 35 minutes late but when we made the reservation we were not told we were to be out of our seats in two hours. When we were handed our menu instead of asking how are you I was told to hurry up and order I didnt have much time. I didn't know what that meant but when the check was dropped at 8:02 without being offered coffee or dessert I quickly found out. There was a table out front that we could easily have been asked to have dessert outside since we were late but instead were told too bad we had two hours to eat. I have been in the restaurant business for 20 years and have owned my own place for 3 years and it has never even occured to me to allow 2 hours for six people to eat or to think I could walk up to a table and tell them they had to leave when they were spending their money in my restaurant. I also have never formally complained or written about a restaurant experience before but after 2 calls I still have not received a call back from the owner. I was told to expect a call when the manager could get a hold of the owner that was 8 days ago I guess they are busy mistreating some other customers.

Fantastic food, noisy, crowded room, wait staff was adequate to very good. Maitre D or greeter or major domo was the rudest, most unpleasant restaurant person I have ever come across. We were not quite finished with our deserts and coffee when we were asked to leave so that others could be seated. We had not wasted time eating or ordering. He was totally out of line and I told him so. so what? Never going back in spite of good food. There are other good food places with more thoughtful employees.

The food was good - not great - for such an "upscale" pricey restaurant. My friend and I had a lot of catching up to do and the waiter came over three times in under half an hour to ask us if we had any questions - our menus were closed because we were talking. As we were chatting and finishing our coffee - about two hours after we sat down - WE WERE ASKED TO LEAVE. They said it was because they needed the table, however, there is a small room in the back with at least half a dozen empty tables. No one I've told this story to can believe that we were treated so badly.

It's always busy for a reason, very good food.
Seems like the BYO's are more consistent than the ones with a liquor license, but in any case you will have a wonderful meal at Blackfish. Of course the fish is great, but I have tried chicken and meat there and it was as good as any place downtown. Not much on decor, and it is small, but your stomach doesn't care about that.

I don't care how good the food might be. This place is full of the rudest people on the planet. My party was told to keep it down because we were laughing. Seriously? I have heard way too many stories of how ignorant the people are - starting with the owner!

We have eaten here many times and LOVED this great BYOB. We have recommended this to many of our friends and co-workers. Tonight we dined there and the food was great as usual and our servers were very friendly. However, after ordering 5 starters, 5 entrees, and 5 desserts for 5 people we were asked to leave. We spent $400 and mind you that does not include alcohol as it was a BYOB. In addition to that, one of us bought a $75 gift certificate for a Christmas present. However, we were asked to leave...we did not even have our coats that they offered to check for us. The host stated there were people waiting for our table. On the way out I counted 4 full tables and a table that sat 2 that were empty. (It was a Thursday evening.) When I got home, I called and asked to speak to the manager and the host who asked us to leave stated he was the manager. When we were there we saw Chip the owner and chef multiple times. He stated he left for the night which we know was not true. I told him I thought there was better ways of asking us to leave such as asking to bring our coats and he stated "what do you expect, you were here for three hours and we normally give people two. I needed that table to sit six people."
I expect much better service when I go out to eat. It completely ruined the night. I will never go back and I will now tell everyone not to eat there.

This little cute comfortable byob makes you feel at home. I was blown away by the food and service. Great music and subtle decor. They really do a TOP NOTCH JOB, The tables are a little close but everyone is so nice, we got to see what our neighbors were eating...it looked so good we are going back to try what they got! What a great time, I would def. go back!

Blackfish is a good upscale restaurant, but really nothing special. With so many excellent restaurants in Philadelphia, I really don't see how this one keeps getting put at the top of "best of" lists. I had the bouillabase, which was flavorful, but nothing better than any other upscale restaurant. I live in Conshy, and wish it was better, but for the prices I'd rather travel in to the city.

t couldn't miss the mark any more if he tried. yes its loud and yes tables are close - but the food is excellent and the service is great, and add in the value of a byo - what more to expect from a byo, esp in conshy? The short ribs and scallops were very tasty - highly recommended. The chef/owner was very visible throughout the night, and I am sure would address any reasonable concerns - or at least say hello. It is definitely worth the trip out to the burbs from the city.

i was shocked to read the review above. I had a wonderful dinner at blackfish recently. Not only did the chef stop by the table to pour the sabayon over the fruit that we ordered, but the apps were top notch, that salmon and egg!!!! and the surf and turf had the most amazing braised short ribs that I have ever tasted!!

I was shocked when I went here. I had the signature dish, Blackfish. It was not very good, the tables are inches apart and it was very loud. I would not go back.
