Exclusive: Kermit Gosnell Says He Is “Spiritually Innocent”–and Sends Abortion-Inspired Poetry from Prison

Details revealed in new Philadelphia magazine story and expanded e-book.

Talking publicly for the first time since his trial and conviction on three counts of murder, one count of involuntary manslaughter and more than 200 counts of violating Pennsylvania’s Abortion Control Act, Philadelphia abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell insists he is “spiritually innocent.”

Speaking exclusively to Philadelphia magazine writer Steve Volk for a new magazine article and e-book, Gosnell—who was convicted in May of snipping the necks of babies born alive during abortion procedures in his West Philadelphia clinic—believes he was serving the best interests of his community and the women who came to him. “In an ideal world,” he said, “we’d have no need for abortion. But bringing a child into the world when it cannot be provided for, that there are not sufficient systems to support, is a greater sin. I considered myself to be in a war against poverty, and I feel comfortable with the things I did and the decisions I made.”

Gosnell contends he is “innocent” of the charges against him, laying out complicated—and not particularly credible—reasons he should have been found not guilty. When Volk asked him if he was actually referring to his own sense of “spiritual innocence,” Gosnell responded, “Yes.”

Gosnell said he considers his conviction to have been motivated by religion and politics. “I have come to believe that the presumption of guilt was compounded by religious convictions,” Gosnell said. “ … Were you aware that Seth [Williams, Philadelphia’s district attorney] was an altar boy? Did you know of the strong Catholic presence in the homicide division?”

Over the course of several weeks this summer, Volk received 12 letters from Gosnell, more than 50 emails, and more than two dozen phone calls. Gosnell also sent several poems he’s written, including one dated April 2013:

Abortion Providers
Are Labeled Killers!
Horrendous, Exploitive
Barbaric, Inhumane
Not Physicians, Oathed To Heal
Lest We Forget,
What Chance Have Those?
Those Without The Support
Of Their Parents
Their Families
Their Communities
Their Societies …
So Many
Without Sufficient Support
Stumble Into Drugs
Into Crime
Into Mental Illness
Into Institutions … And …
Languish in Jails …

The story, entitled “Gosnell’s Babies,” runs in the October issue of Philadelphia magazine, which hits newsstands this week. You can read an excerpt here. The magazine is simultaneously publishing an expanded version of “Gosnell’s Babies” as an e-book. Buy it for Kindle, iPad/iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac exclusively at amazon.com.

Steve Volk and Philadelphia magazine Editor-in-chief Tom McGrath held a Google Hangout on Sept. 26 to discuss “Gosnell’s Babies.” Watch it below.

They are not Gosnell’s babies. Those innocent babies he murdered belong to God now.

The idea that unwanted children end up being abused is a lie. This happens to children all over the world, even in the wealthiest of families. The more we devalue life by promoting murder of the unwanted, the more wanted children are going to be neglected. There are many children that are abused, wanted or not, it is a sad fact of the cursed world we live in.

The title Gosnel’s Babies, makes me sick! I find it very offensive. Do you call the victims of serial killers something they own?
Anyways, the fact that they women were mostly from poverty does not make the babies any less wanted than from any other area. These women just needed a little support and help while they were pregnant and I believe many of these babies would be happy little children now.
Even if the parents could not keep them there are many families out there that would be happy to adopt a child, but the system is so screwed up and expensive that it makes adoption so difficult. I think adoption should be easier, maybe then the abortion rates would drop dramatically?

Scary how sick a mind can become! Killing babies to prevent them from being neglected- the correct word for this, aside from cold blooded murder, is EUGENICS! He is no better than the Nazi doctors of WW II!

Why does the media give a wit what he says- thank God he is in prison and I feel for the mothers of the aborted children! God bless you all

what a sick individual–his sins hit heaven and he will answer to Jesus as to how he treated these unborn babies–and if he was so interested in their well being-why not start an organization to help those unwanted children??becoz evil distorts truth and lies –Jesus said to ‘suffer the little children’-not to kill them–he is a prime example of an antichrist–someone who is against Jesus and His teachings

me be beliven he be inoset. doc gorbel be a goo boy. honkies doen be puttin he in jail.
Sadly, there are some imbeciles who will believe someone just because they are black. Not the first time that has happened

He can pontificate all he wants. The fact is, he is a monster.
This is a man that slit the necks, severed the spinal cords and suctioned the brains out of hundreds of born, living, viable babies, sometimes joking along the way.
He also collected the feet of babies, which he cut from their bodies.
Don’t tell me he is “spiritual”.

Why are we giving this demented and evil monster the media publicity and personal ego satisfaction of seeing his defense of cold blooded murder in print? Is this even news that is fit to print? The only good thing here is that the public will have a chance to better understand the psyche of today’s abortionists like Mr. Gosnell who believe that the human murdering of babies is justified when it is for the overall public good. Sadly Mr. Gosnell is only the tip of the iceberg. Since Roe v. Wade more the 56 million American babies have been terminated. And as for the overall public good that these 56 million souls have been sacrificed for. Do we have any positive results to show for them? How about poverty, crime, drugs, killings, education, family stability, personal happiness and wellbeing? Better or worse?

May Gosnell rot in hell, sooner rather than later.

We should hope and pray that he converts before death.

Obama is also Innocent for giving the green light to this HORROR

    • Blaire Sovereign

And HOW exactly did Obama “give the green light” to this?! I’m pretty sure Obama, like you and I, had no idea Dr. Gosnell even existed before he was arrested and this came to light. You’re just looking for another excuse to hate Obama; you should be more upset about the drones killing innocent people by the hundreds.

      • Joe Theisen

We did know Dr Gosnell existed.

  • JacksonPearson

“Spiritually Innocent”… not hardly, Mr. Gosnell. Enjoy your trip to hell, because eternity is a real long time for abortionists like yourself, to ponder their crimes, against God’s defenseless children.

  • Jenn

This article is LACKING! He was also accused of killing a woman! and he saved pieces of the babies that came out alive! He was scary! No religion about it.

  • Lex

Gosnell is not the one who defines what it means to be “spiritually innocent,” OR, he is God, but is God an abortionist? According to some on the hard left, hell yes!

    • Blaire Sovereign

According to the hard left? Um no, according to NUMBERS (GO READ YOUR BIBLE)

    Gosnell is really sick… :(

  • Nuala2011

Gosnell’s compasion is false compassion or he would have helped the baby struggling for life in the toilet.
