It has begun.

From noon to 1 p.m. at the Independence Mall on 6th and Market streets, you can get your hands on a (free!) hoagie for the 24th annual Wawa Hoagie Day.

Preparation kicked off early this morning.

Six tons of hoagie will prepared. We repeat: six tons.

The recipe includes Italian ham, genoa salami, prosciuttini, provolone cheese, tomatoes, iceberg lettuce and sliced onions – at least 900 pounds of each.

Food Network star Robert Irvine will be on site to help out, and five tons of hoagies will be sliced and served to those who want it.

Police officers, firefighters, members of the United Service Organizations, the Pennsylvania National Army Guard and Pennsylvania National Air Guard are helping prepares hoagies as well.

It’s all part of the seventh annual Wawa Welcome America! festival, which concludes on the Fourth of July with a Parkway concert featuring Leon Bridges, Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr.Yazz the Greatest and Philly POPS, as well as fireworks, of course.
