Fitbit Finally Recalls Fitness Tracker After Skin Irritation Complaints

Remember those super gnarly skin irritations Fitbit Force users were complaining about a few weeks ago? To jog your memory: In January, news began circulating of Fitbit Force users experiencing painful rashes as a result of wearing the wristband fitness tracker. At the time, the company claimed that the irritation was probably being caused by an an allergy to the wristband material or as a result of bacteria accumulation. In other words, it was no big deal. But now it looks like it might be a bit more serious than the company originally let on.
Last Friday, Fitbit voluntarily recalled the Fitbit Force tracker “out of an abundance of caution,” according to Health. The company was already offering refunds to folks who’d experienced skin irritation after using the tracker, but now they are offering money back to all Fitbit Force customers.
While the company maintains its position that users are probably just experiencing allergic contact dermatitis in reaction to the nickel used in the device, it looks like they could be rethinking the five-month-old Force altogether. The company announced in a statement on Thursday, saying, “To our Force community, rest assured we’re working on our next-generation tracker and will announce news about it soon.”
