Pulse: Pursuits: 60-Second critic: Sands Casino Bethlehem

Grade: A

When we heard the Sands was opening a slots parlor at the long-shuttered Bethlehem Steel Plant, we expected a big old box with a lousy look and lousier food. (Hello, Harrah’s Chester and Philly Park.) We were wrong. The month-old casino sports an ingenious design that incorporates the industrial heritage of the area, respectable steaks and seafood at Emeril’s (Bam!) Chop House, plus lively bands and good stiff drinks in the Molten Lounge. And since it’s in Bethlehem (an hour-plus northward), it’s worlds away from the chaos and confusion of A.C.
