The Eagles’ Candidates To Replace Maclin

Riley CooperThe Eagles were dealt their first big blow of the summer, losing Jeremy Maclin for the season with a torn ACL injury Saturday.

Entering the final year of his deal, Maclin was committed to proving his worth on the field this offseason.

“I think Jeremy Maclin has emerged as one of the hardest-working guys on our team,” Michael Vick said last month at Maclin’s football camp in West Deptford, N.J. “You watch him in the weight room, he goes in there and he’s just a different person there. So I think that’ll translate over to the field.”

Instead, Maclin faces surgery and a grueling rehab regimen away from his teammates in the months ahead.

In the past three seasons, Maclin has averaged 67 catches, 893 yards and seven touchdowns. So how will the Eagles replace that production in 2013? Here’s a look at their current options on the roster.

Casey Shows Up Early, Preps For ‘Very Important’ Role

James CaseyJames Casey lined up with his hand on the ground, waited for the imaginary snap, exploded out of his stance and started into his pass route.

This was last Thursday, a full week before the Eagles’ new tight end was required to be at the NovaCare Complex. But there he was, all by himself on the practice field on the hottest day of summer (98 degrees).

When the Eagles signed Casey back in March, Chip Kelly referred to him as a tempo-setter. And this is exactly what he was talking about. Casey doesn’t seem to care much for the offseason. Entering his fifth year in the league, he has developed a routine: show up to the facility three weeks before camp starts, get settled and be one of the players to set the tone when everybody else shows up.

On Tuesday, when Eagles’ rookies practiced for the first time, the only veterans in attendance (other than the quarterbacks) were Casey and Jason Kelce.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Celek Managing the Wear And Tear

Brent Celek appeared in 93 straight NFL games before a concussion forced him to sit out against Cincinnati last December. That stopped an iron man streak that not only spanned his entire professional career, but his college and high school days as well.

“The last time I missed a game was in the sixth grade. I dislocated my elbow,” said Celek back in November. “I popped it back in myself. I scored a touchdown on the play…It was just reaction. I just hit it and it popped back in. And when I popped it back in it broke.”

There have been plenty of injuries to fight through since. He dislocated his shoulder while at Cincinnati. Sustained a shoulder tear his rookie season with the Eagles (“It would dislocate every single game,” he said). Suffered a sports hernia and a torn labrum in his hip. Got that concussion against the Bucs last year. And on and on…

The tolerance for pain and willingness to fight through it is obviously very admirable. But you wonder about the cumulative effect.

In Chip Kelly’s System, Much Is Asked Of the Tight Ends

You might remember Chip Kelly‘s entertaining response to the tight end question back in April, when he was asked to explain how he can make it work with Brent Celek, James Casey and Zach Ertz all vying for playing time.

“Yeah. You go like that (holds three fingers in the air) and three tight ends go in the game,” he said.

“We are going to go three tight ends in a game. Now, do they go three linebackers? We split them out and throw passes. If they go three DB’s, we smash you. So, pick your poison. Simple game. Isn’t hard. You guys thought coaching was hard. They bring little guys in, you run the ball. They bring big guys in, you throw the ball.”

That’s why Kelly values tight ends so much: they create matchup problems. But in order to capitalize on those matchup advantages, the ends have to be able to successfully “smash” the opposition as a blocker in one moment and create in the passing game the next. That is the challenge that faces this group in Year One under Kelly.

Changes Under Kelly: Smoothies, Music And Heart Monitors

As Vinny Curry headed towards the locker room after the Eagles’ second mini-camp practice, there was a snack waiting for him in the hallway.

“Mango, peanut butter and banana,” explained the second-year defensive end.

Post-practice smoothies are just one of many changes these days at the NovaCare Complex. In previous years, players would be tossed Gatorades as they walked off the field. Now, lined up along several tables sat custom-made smoothies with each player’s name written on the plastic cups.

Celek: Eagles’ New Methods Will ‘Change the League’

The Eagles have only had two days of practice under Chip Kelly, but count tight end Brent Celek among the players who are already impressed.

Celek was a fifth-round pick in 2007, only knew one way of doing things through his first six seasons, but is now seeing some sweeping changes at the NovaCare Complex.

Eagles Players Brace For New Tempo, New Training

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason KelceThe changes Chip Kelly is implementing extend well beyond the locker room shake-up.

One area where players are already noticing a difference is in the weight room.

“The weight conditioning is a little bit more up-tempo than it was under [previous strength and conditioning coach] Barry Rubin,” said center Jason Kelce. “I think that part of the reason why is because we’re going to run up-tempo. Instead of being able to relax and just kind of walk around the weight room and do your lifts, it’s more at a steady pace where you have a set amount of time rest period. I think the receivers and those guys might be doing a little bit more conditioning. They know they’re in for a lot of running in this offense.”

Kelly Makes Changes To Eagles’ Locker Room

When Eagles players return to the NovaCare locker room in the coming weeks, they’re going to notice some changes.

Instead of having the space organized by positional groups, Chip Kelly has decided to mix things up. A quarterback might find himself next to a safety, a wide receiver alongside a linebacker, and so on.

“I think it’s going to help us blend a little better as a team,” said offensive lineman Todd Herremans, who hosted a fund-raising event for the Herremans Foundation Thursday night. “You’re with your position so much in the meeting rooms and everything like that. This will also have us hold each other accountable.”
