SRC Officially Nixes Teacher Seniority

As is their wont in times of “fiscal crisis,” the School Reform Commission voted last night to suspend major parts of the Pennsylvania School Code. Practically speaking, the SRC has now:

A. Suspended the rule that awards automatic raises for teachers after each year of service.

B. Allowed licensed but uncertified nurses to practice in public schools.

C. Here’s the big one: Got rid of rules that mandate the re-hiring of teachers based on seniority, rather than merit.

Several other provisions, which seem like the sort of things the teacher’s union might actually approve of, were also passed: Rules that would allow the SRC to more easily penalize corrupt charters and measures to facilitate selling off unused property. [School Notebook]
