Weekend Roundup: John Wind’s ‘The Making of a Modern Man’ Opens

FRIDAY
Famed jewelry designer John Wind’s latest exhibit, “The Making of a Modern Man,” opens tonight at InLiquid. As the Metro reports, the gallery will be filled with pieces that show the juxtaposition between a modern man working to create feminine beauty: “Busts of influential men, like Beethoven, are adorned with necklaces of handheld appliances and tangled wires. A sculpture of David is decked out with pearls, watches and Elvis paraphernalia.” Opening reception starts tonight at 6 p.m., free, the exhibit runs through June 26 at James Oliver Gallery, 723 Chestnut St.

SATURDAY
Three of Philly’s hardest-working LGBT advocates will be honored tonight at the Mazzoni Center’s annual Elixr: The Cure for the Common Gala. The evening will feature a full open bar, hors d’oeuvres and a buffet, and vocal trio Hotsy-Totsy, DJ Carl Michaels and jazz vocalist Dena Underwood will provide the musical entertainment. All proceeds from the evening’s ticket sales will support the Mazzoni Center’s future programs and services for the LGBT community. 5:30 p.m.-10 p.m., $150-$200, Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market St.

SUNDAY
The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund has a full day planned to celebrate its annual HEROES event. Things start off early at Drag Yourself to Brunch an afternoon drag show at Fire & Ice. The main ceremony, where HERO awards will be given to a handful of local LGBT and ally movers and shakers, is from noon to 3 p.m. at Hotel Monaco. And the after-party and T-Dance is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. back at Fire & Ice. U.S. Figure skater and DVLF’s 2013 National HERO honoree will be in attendance at all three events.
