Video: Looking Ahead at Marriage Equality in 2013
By now you’ve surely heard the exciting news that came from Rhode Island yesterday. If not, the state’s House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation that would allow gays and lesbians to get hitched. From there, the bill moves to the Senate, where some say it faces an uncertain future. If passed, however, the Plantation State would become the 10th in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage.
Rhode Island may getting all the attention this week, but the state is actually among 10 others that could be this close to passing gay-marriage legislation in 2013. I know. It’s hard to keep track. If you find it all a little overwhelming, this quick, four-and-a-half-minute video from the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) offers a great rundown of each state at play this year, and how far along they are in the process. Among those making moves is Illinois, Oregon, Indiana and Ohio. Noticeably absent? Pennsylvania!
I’ll admit, the video’s not the most exciting four minutes you’ll spend today, but it comes in handy if you want to stay abreast of all the gay-marriage news/get a little more fired up that we’re not on the list.
