Say what you will about Wal-Mart, but the Arkansas-based retail chain recently added trans protections for workers. Starting this week, employees cannot legally be discriminated against for their gender identity at any of the nationwide stores. And this has the HRC singing Wal-Mar’s praises.

“What matters in the workplace is how you do your job,” says HRC President Joe Solmonese in a press statement, “not your gender identity or sexual orientation. As the nation’s largest private employer, Wal-Mart shows that doing the right thing is also good for business. We urge them to continue to move forward by ensuring all of their LGBT employees receive equal benefits.”

He adds that he hopes Congress follows this lead by making the Employment Non-Discrimination Act the law of the land.
