How Ruben Amaro Really Landed Cliff Lee

The April issue of Philly Mag—with Cliff Lee on the cover—is just about to hit the streets, and inside is a profile of Ruben Amaro. The Phils GM tells writer Nick DiUlio all the details of how the team pulled off the Cliff Lee signing back in December, and it turns out Cliff’s wife, Kristen, had more than a little to do with it. While shopping at Barnes & Noble in Langhorne last November, Amaro got a call from the Lees, who made it pretty clear they were devastated about having been traded away a year earlier—and were anxious to come back to Philly.

“Ruben, you broke my heart once,” Kirsten Lee said. “Please don’t break my heart again.”
