Mazzoni’s Executive Director Joins National Coalition for LGBT Health

Philly's Nurit Shein joins the ranks of gay and lesbian healthcare leaders in the U.S.

Nurit Shein is a well-known face on the frontier of LGBT health in Philly. As the executive director of the Mazzoni Center, one of the only health centers in the country specializing in LGBT issues, Shein was recently named to the board of directors of the National Coalition for LGBT Health in Washington, D.C.

Founded 10 years ago, the coalition is committed to improving the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals through federal advocacy focused on research, policy, education and training. Among the major initiatives the coalition was dedicated to this past year was the implementation of the federal government’s Affordable Care Act and working to broaden definitions of “community” in government funding to involve LGBT people.

“As a founding member of the coalition, I am honored to continue my involvement with this organization, which is working at the national level to achieve the goals and outcomes in healthcare for the LGBT community that has been our focus on the regional level at Mazzoni Center for many years,” Shein said in a press statement. “I look forward to being a part of their work.”

She joins board members from around the country known for their work in LGBT healthcare, including Daniel Gould, director of the California LGBT Health and Human Services Network at Equality California; Verónica Bayetti Flores, senior policy analyst at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health; and Leslie Calman, executive director of Mautner Project; and newly elected member Michael Plankey, assistant professor of medicine at Georgetown University and the LGBT Caucus of the American Public Health Association.
