Meet These Trans Cover Boys

Original Plumbing benefits Trans-Health

Original Plumbing (OP) magazine, a quarterly publication especially for transgendered men, is celebrating is fifth issue launch in West Philly tonight (7-11 p.m.) at Danger Danger Gallery. The new “fashion” issue features a slew of hometown models, many of whom will be strutting their stuff in person to the sounds of Philly’s own DJ Evelyn Manlove.

“Tonight I’ll be playing a mix of primarily NuDisco and Indie Electro, plus some hip hop and top 40 remixes,” says Manlove. “I feel that any event which increases the visibility of the transgender community is important for trans-health awareness. Transmen are perhaps the most invisible part of our community since, in many cases, they transition relatively quickly towards passing their chosen gender.”

OP Editor and Photographer Amos Mac will be hosting this BYOB fundraiser benefiting the annual Philadelphia Trans-Health Conference, which features burlesque performances by Key from Peek-a-Boo Revue and Miss Mary Wanna. There’s a sex demo on tap with plenty of free swag by the Screws of Screwsmart, a hip-hop show by Wordz the Poet Emcee and drag by Rome & Messapotamia. Musician Toshio Mana is also going solo for the special occasion and guests can even win a date with some of the guys during a special OP auction.

Manlove admits many people don’t always understand what it means to be in transition. “I think that many peoples’ concept of what a transgendered person is is still limited to the stereotype of male to female sexworkers,” says Manlove. “Original Plumbing is great because it draws attention to and celebrates the lives of transmen. In the same respect, I think this event is excellent as it seems to be drawing a lot of attention to the issue.”
