Meet Reading's sneaker king

This month, if you find yourself in a city that Nike has deemed worthy of one of those massive Niketown stores—like New York, Chicago, Seattle—you might be able to snag some limited-edition Jordan Melo M6 Future Sole basketball sneaks. Designed by Reading high-school senior Austin Jermacans, the $125 shoes won Nike’s Future Sole competition—a national contest seeking young talent—and were modeled for Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony, who’s worn the kicks in NBA games. “That’s the big reason why I want to be a shoe designer—I’m interested in what my idols are wearing,” says Jermacans. The kid’s no one-hit wonder: Nike also named a Jermacans design a finalist in another contest. He’s hoping it’s a foot in the door to the shoe biz after he graduates from Penn State in 2014. He’s well on his way—now if only Nike would give Philly some love …
