Health: Fight Cancer, One Step at a Time

Now’s the time to start training for Philly’s Three-Day Walk for the Cure

Sixty miles. That’s almost three marathons long. And that’s exactly how far volunteers will be walking for the Breast Cancer 3-day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure on October 17th.

This isn’t an event where you just roll out of bed, slap on your sneaks and start walking. Oh, no. This requires some prep work. And if the thought of spending your Saturday mornings pounding the pavement (sometimes up to 25 miles at a time, if you’re following the Susan G. Komen, whip-your-butt-into-shape plan) makes you want to crawl back in bed, it’s time to start training with a team.

“Part of our mission is to give back to the community, and people need motivation to do this [walk],” says Phyllis Bookspan, founder and owner of RYAH, a yoga and health center located in Conshocken, as well as the leader of RYAH Cares, a five-person team training for October’s big event. And they want you to come on out and walk with them. Sessions are free, open to anyone and meet about once a week at various locations throughout the Philadelphia area, including the scenic Ridley Creek State Park in Newton Square. “We’re a friendly, non-intimidating group. Anyone can join. The more people on our team, the better,” says Bookspan. Though you can join anytime, if you spend more time on the couch than at the gym, you’ll want to start training soon. (No later than the end of August, so get crackin’!)

If you’re a little sore after all that walking, treat yourself to a yoga class or a massage — RYAH offers both. Oh, and if you do decide to walk the event with the team, you’ll be walking with yoga instructors — probably the perfect people to keep around incase that lower back starts to kill around mile 47 and you need someone to help you stretch out those hamstrings.
