Pulse: 60-Second Critic: Radio: Hear Philly

Hear Philly

Not long ago, the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation paired with KYW to launch Hear Philly, an Internet radio show designed to give tourists the rundown on where and how to enjoy the city. Familiar KYW voices narrate segments such as “You Gotta Have Art” and “Positively Philadelphia,” giving the show an air of authority. But not only does the dubbed “audio odyssey” tend to point out gimmicky ways for folks to spend their cash (don’t just eat the Cheesy Cheese Mac and Cheese at Ms. Tootsie’s — pick up a sweatshirt at the souvenir shop!); it sometimes leads to dead ends: One recent segment featured a long-since shuttered restaurant. And as with KYW news radio, there’s no way to navigate the segments, so you may be waiting to hear the concert updates, but get stuck listening to the history behind Philly’s street names. Grade: D
