We get a cheap thrill out of Ikea, too — but we sort of need a break from screwing together and hammering all those random faux-wood boards and too-small nails and way-wobbly drawers. That's why we're thrilled to have discovered Iola Design. The company, led by father-son team David and Steven Hessler, creates sleek, space-saving shelving units and custom furniture out of eco-savvy bamboo — and gives 1 percent of its profits to US Doctors for Africa to help AIDS victims. Plus, it's recently partnered with Deborah Goldhaft, a New England glass artist (see fireiceglass.com), to incorporate illuminated glass panels and doors into their units. So, now, getting organized isn't just a good thing for you and your living room/study/den — it's good for the environment, and good for your shopping karma.
