THE LOST PHONE DIARIES
G Philly‘s own hairy songbird Alexander Kacala will be taking guests on a musical romp through a catalog of tunes by his favorite female vocalists — singers like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Tracy Chapman and his fairy god diva Amy Winehouse. “I’ve picked songs that I think are fun,” he told me on the phone this week just after leaving rehearsal in South Philly. Unlike his drag alter ego, Tammy Faymous, who usually sings to karaoke tracks, Alex’s GayFest! debut will feature a live band. “It gives me a chance to switch up the arrangements so they are better suited to my voice,” he says. “Plus, I’m able to add more of a rock edge to some of the pop songs I’m singing.” So does this mean we won’t be treated to an appearance by Miss Faymous at all? Signs are pointing to yes, but only briefly. You know that drunk bitch couldn’t stay conscious for a whole cabaret. THE NEW CENTURY
GayFest! organizer Rich Rubin directs the Philly debut of Paul Rudnick’s character comedy that follows a mom with three queer kids, a man booted out of New York for being too gay and a Midwestern woman with an obsession with crafting. In the end their paths cross for a big gay-wonderful finale. Starring G Philly fave R. Eric Thomas. Preview performance on Thu., Aug. 15, $20, 7 p.m.; opens Fri., Aug. 16 and runs through Sat., Aug. 24, various times, $25, Second Stage at the Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St.
SOMEONE BROUGHT ME
Quince regular Daniel Talbott’s latest was commissioned especially for GayFest!. The story is set in the apocalyptic future and follows a famous photographer and the street man who poses for him and opens his eyes to the possibility of kindness in a gone-to-pot world. Preview performance on Thu., Aug. 15, $20, 9:30 p.m.; opens Fri., Aug. 16 and runs through Sat., Aug. 24, various times, $25, Second Stage at the Adrienne.
STAGED READING OF TWO SPOONS
Get a sneak peek at playwright Peter Mercurio’s most recent work about Steve and Larry, gay parents who take a trip to Philadelphia where they find their relationship boundaries pushed after meeting a sexy stranger. Sun., Aug. 18, 1 p.m., $5, Tabu Lounge and Sports Bar, 200 S. 12th St.
