Jonathan Adler is half of one of my favorite Gay Power Couples, the other half being his husband, Simon Doonan, creative director of Barney’s. So yay for me when I was offered a preview of his new Old City location before doors opened to the public this week.

A nice Jewish boy from Bridgeton, N.J., Adler launched his business in 1994. Sixteen years later, he now operates 14 stores in six different states – and the latest in Philadelphia. His Old City boutique features an array of his Happy Chic designs, including pillows (shout out to Scranton), bedding, furniture and, of course, pottery.

The day I was set to meet Mr. Adler, I put on my Baby Barnacle – with cookies from Jones in hand – and headed over to the Third Street outpost on a freezing day. The baby looked great, by the way; she was working a resort-wear look.

Team Adler was in full set-up mode when I arrived, putting the final touches on the first floor. Still high on latkes, I fell in love with the peacock menorah. Adler told me he thinks it’s one of the best pieces he’s ever done.

We discussed many things in the new shop: the physical stature of the Jewish diaspora (because I am giant); how his family ended up in Southern New Jersey (they were chicken farmers); his unwavering devotion to the Eagles (his butch quirk) and how he is “all about Philly,” having visited numerous times over the years as his parents had a pied-à-terre here in town.

And cheers to Woody’s! Perhaps a surprising fact, but he’s been many times.

If you’re worried about picking up the perfect gift for a gay friend – or anyone who appreciates mid-century modern design with a whimsical flair – then check out the new Jonathan Adler store this month. You’ll find familiar favorites, like his platinum collection and furniture, but also some new additions.

Fondue never goes out of style. And there are always the naughty and nice bottle stoppers, zig zag throw, British flag coasters or peacock lollipop holder for a holiday housewarming. Adler is all about the peacocks.

The official launch party of Jonathan Adler (33 N. Third St., 215-574-1999) is tonight by invite only, but the shop’s open seven days a week: Mon.-Sat. (10 a.m. – 8 p.m.) and Sun. (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.).
