Eagles Wake-Up Call: Birds 24/7 Gets A Radio Show

Thanks in large part to the tremendous response from you, the reader, we’re  branching out.

Philly Mag is partnering with 97.5 The Fanatic to bring you “Birds 24/7” the show, Mondays from 6-7 p.m. during football season. We’ll be broadcasting live from 360 at Parx Casino in Bensalem, so make sure you come check us out starting September 10.

I’ve served as Eagles beat reporter and host for the Fanatic for the past few years and have been with the station since its infancy. I can’t say enough about the people that work there and how proud I am of what we’ve all built. It’s only fitting that the Fanatic would forge a partnership with a brand as well-respected as Philadelphia magazine.

Sheil and I will have a lot of fun bringing you the same kind of original reporting and analysis that we have tried to provide in this forum, with a little banter thrown in. Fresh off the game, we’ll dig in, pull out all the relevant storylines, and have a good time trying to make sense of it all. Really looking forward to it.

WHAT YOU MISSED

Jamar Chaney is working back in at nickel linebacker now that he’s healthy. Does that mean DeMeco Ryans will be off the field on third down? This is a story worth monitoring.

Sheil hands out a cheat sheet for the Eagles offense against the Browns “D.”

Fletcher Cox found his way onto the injury report with knee inflammation.

In my Twitter Mailbag, I addressed whether the book is out on DeSean Jackson.

Our positional previews continued. Sheil handled the safeties and I broke down wide receiver.

And some local sports celebs, from Jeremiah Trotter to Billy King, weigh in with their predictions for the Eagles season.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

An NFL scout pulled no punches when giving  his position-by-position take on the Eagles to Paul Domowitch of the Daily News. A must-read. Here’s part of his take on Michael Vick.

In my mind, Mike Vick is a 9-7 quarterback. Every now and then, he’ll make a great play with either his arm or feet that makes your jaw drop. But he isn’t very accurate, makes too many poor decisions, and can’t stay healthy.

He is equally tough on Ryans.

That’s why DeMeco Ryans was so ineffective for them in the preseason. He really has no idea how to play behind this line…DeMeco just isn’t the same player he was before the injury, and I don’t think he’s ever going to be. I can’t see any scenario where he’s going to be successful, particularly behind this line.

There is sure to be a wide range of emotions in Cleveland Sunday upon the news that former Browns owner Art Modell, who moved the team to Baltimore in 1996, has died. There are currently no plans to have a moment of silence for Modell before the game, per the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

At the time of his death, he was still public enemy No. 1 in Cleveland, the city he loved. After moving to Baltimore, Modell was never able to return here because of death threats. For a time, he was forced to travel with two armed bodyguards.

“I have a great legacy, tarnished somewhat by the move,” he said in 1999. “The politicians and the bureaucrats saw fit to cover their own rear ends by blaming it on me.”

COMING UP

The Eagles’ final tune-up in front of their opener at Cleveland is at 11:45. Andy Reid will address the media afterwards.
