Carol Erickson, Formerly of CBS 3, Joins Calkins Media

Erickson, the well-known meteorologist and animal welfare activist, left the station earlier this year.

Meteorologist and TV personality Carol Erickson, who had been at CBS 3 since 1978 before leaving earlier this year, has been hired for a job at Calkins Media. The company owns several suburban papers in Philadelphia and New Jersey, most notably the Bucks County Courier Times, and three television stations in Florida.

In July, Erickson wrote on Facebook that — despite KYW’s purge of talent earlier this summer — she had been offered another contract by the station. “I have decided instead to focus my time on what means the most to me — animal welfare,” she wrote.

Joe Mason — a copy editor for the Courier, Doylestown Intelligencer and Burlington County Times — interviewed her on his podcast last night.

“I’m so excited about this opportunity,” Erickson said on the podcast. “I have loved the Burlington County Times… you’re so animal friendly, I love your Newsbreak [a feature on Calkins websites], you’re always saying something smart about animals.”

“I identified the Burlington County Times and Calkins Media, several years ago, as a place I wanted to graduate to,” she explained on the podcast, adding she hoped to do segments on animal welfare for the company. She’ll be doing a variety of news and feature segments on-screen for Calkins.

Courier executive editor Shane Fitzgerald emailed staffers earlier this week, writing that Erickson “will being an energy and fire to our team and be a terrific teacher and mentor as we continue to improve in our brave, new video world.” She starts on August 25th, next Tuesday.

Trish Hartman, who previously did video for Calkins, left for 6 ABC earlier this year.
