Johnny Doc Challenger Kicked Off Ballot

Karen Brown, who was looking to oust John Dougherty as ward leader, violated a rule that bars candidates from having supported Republicans recently.

Karen Brown ran for mayor as a Republican in 2011 and got a smaller percentage of the vote than Milton Street did in the primary. She was probably not much of a threat to regain her position of Democratic committeewoman in the First Ward, a position she held for 20 years before switching to Republican to run for mayor in 2011.

But she was kicked off the ballot anyway, Bob Warner reports today. Brown violated a Democratic party rule that prohibits ward leader candidates from having supported a Republican in the last two years. Brown returned to the Democratic party in February.

Dougherty actually predicted this would happen earlier this month, telling Warner that “it’s illegal” and that Brown was “looking for a job.”
