Since the Eagles returned to the Novacare Complex 10 days ago, Akeem Jordan hasn’t had much company at his locker.
The sixth-year linebacker has gone largely unnoticed. Many (present company included) figured he was battling for a roster spot with Keenan Clayton, looking to continue his strong play on special teams.
But things changed today. The last question for Andy Reid during his media session, which lasted about 15 minutes, was about Brian Rolle, and whether the second-year player was still the team’s starting WILL linebacker.
“Right now, no,” Reid said. “Akeem is going to work in there as a starter.”
When the Eagles travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns in Week 1, King Dunlap is expected to start at left tackle.
Andy Reid said today that Dunlap has earned the nod over Demetress Bell and likely will sit with the rest of the starters Thursday night in the preseason finale against the Jets.
Eagles head coach Andy Reid confirmed today that defensive tackle Mike Patterson could miss the entire season as he recovers from offseason brain surgery.
“I think that’s going to be an extended time here,” Reid said. “We’ve just got to see how that goes, if he’s able to go at all this year. We just have to see how that works out. We’ll take checkups in increments here, but right now, it’s going to be awhile.”
The Eagles cut their roster down to 80 players today. They have to get to 75 by Monday afternoon. Here are the 10 guys they cut.
You can feel Andy Reid’s grip growing tighter. The closer it gets to cut-down day, the harder he clasps onto his collection of talent along the defensive front.
“You know how I feel about that. If I can keep them all, I will,” said Reid. “As many as you can keep. I think that’s an important position. Put a lot of responsibility on them. We’ll have to see how the numbers turn out, but I don’t like giving up good defensive linemen.”
Nick Foles was definitely playing the part Friday night. After one of the scoring drives, he spent the defensive series over the shoulder of Marty Mornhinweg, studying still shots and diagnosing the Browns defense. He then walked over to the bench and gave each of his offensive linemen a pat on the chest and a few words of praise before strapping the helmet back on.
The latest line: 12-of-19 for 146 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, a 99.9 quarterback rating and a couple of dazzlers.
The next time the Eagles take to these sidelines, in a little over two weeks from now, the scene will be much different. “Things will be a lot more serious,” as veteran tackle Cullen Jenkins put it. It will be Michael Vick‘s show, assuming health.
For a few weeks, though, the spotlight has belonged to the rookie out of Arizona, and he took very naturally to it.
On March 29, King Dunlap was not on an NFL roster.
Less than three months later, he’s in the driver’s seat to be the Eagles’ starting left tackle.
With the opener just about two weeks away, the offensive line has question marks.
