The Eagles announced today that they’ve acquired wide receiver Arrelious Benn and a seventh-round pick from the Bucs in exchange for a sixth-rounder and a conditional pick in 2014.
Eagles President Don Smolenski met with a group of reporters Friday to discuss the team’s decision to hold training camp in Philadelphia this year. Some takeaways:
New regime, new site for training camp.
The Eagles announced Friday that they will hold training camp in Philadelphia this summer both at the NovaCare Complex and Lincoln Financial Field, ending a 17-year run at Lehigh University.
According to the team, the new set-up will include a number of free, public practices at the Linc along with private practices by invitation only at NovaCare.
From Kenny Phillips’ upside to overhauling the secondary to draft priorities, here are five free agency leftovers with general manager Howie Roseman.
Quarterback EJ Manuel is doing a weekly diary here on Birds 24/7 as we count down to the draft. In this installment, he talks about his experience at Jon Gruden‘s quarterback camp, upcoming private workouts, and more.
West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith worked out for teams around the league Thursday during his Pro Day.
According to a USA Today report, 29 of the NFL’s 32 franchises had a representative there, including the Eagles, who sent senior scouting adviser Tom Donahoe.
Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman did not need to attend because they already worked Smith out earlier in the week. The coach and GM were joined by owner Jeffrey Lurie on Monday in Morgantown.
Ron Jaworski was in attendance Thursday and asked Smith about his meeting with the Eagles’ brass.
Cary Williams made headlines when he shoved a referee during a skirmish between the Ravens and Niners in Super Bowl XLVII. He was kicked off his first college team. He was suspended back in 2010 for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
He has not, in other words, always walked the straight line.
The 28-year-old has also overcome his missteps to become a starting cornerback in the NFL, and most recently, a Super Bowl champion. He talked about his unique story with 97.5 The Fanatic Thursday.
The Eagles made yet another move Thursday evening, signing Texans outside linebacker Connor Barwin to a six-year deal.
“We didn’t go into this necessarily thinking that we were going to have the opportunity for Connor,” said general manager Howie Roseman. “But as we went through the market in the last couple days, some things popped up that we hadn’t anticipated early on in the free agency process.”
The Eagles made a couple additions to their secondary today, signing cornerback Cary Williams and safety Kenny Phillips.

The initial flurry is over, but as I write this, we’re not even 48 hours into free agency.
After adding five players on Tuesday, the Eagles will look to continue to build their roster in the coming days. They have the cap space to make a splash (several big names are still available), or perhaps more likely, take advantage of value.
Having said that, here are 10 names (in no particular order) who could still be on their radar.
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie signed a one-year deal with Broncos late Wednesday night.
Nobody knows the holes in DRC’s game better than Eagles observers, but many believed there would be some competition for the talented 26-year-old. It never developed, and DRC finds himself on a prove-it contract in Denver.
His signing solidifies the fact that the Eagles will go into 2013 with two new starting corners. They inked former Ram Bradley Fletcher to a two-year deal on the first day of free agency to compete for a job, but the all-important position remains paper thin at the moment.
Where to go from here?
Defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois left Philadelphia without a deal from the Eagles Wednesday. Plus, the latest buzz on Connor Barwin, Danny Amendola and others.
The question was about the quarterback position, and it was offered up to either to Chip Kelly or Howie Roseman, who were seated at opposite ends of the table in the NovaCare auditorium.
You worked out Geno Smith earlier this week. You brought in Matt Scott for a visit. Do you expect to draft a quarterback come April?
The head coach and general manager exchanged glances and waited a beat before Kelly decided to take it on.
Chip Kelly was asked about James Casey’s versatility when he brought up an interesting name.
“I think the versatility that you can present to defenses is when you have a certain grouping in the game, there’s not only one thing you can do,” Kelly said. “I think the teams that have been successful doing it, you watch the Patriots line up Aaron Hernandez all over the place. Is he going to be a tight end? Is he going to be a receiver? Is he going to be a running back?
“It makes it very difficult for the defense. They don’t know at the beginning of the play where people are going to line up and what they’re going to do. It keeps them on their toes. We want guys that can do that. You really get pigeon-holed when you have one-dimensional players. And when you do, it makes it a little bit easier for the defenses to go out there and understand what’s going to go on in certain formations.”
That was really all Kelly needed to say to explain why he thinks Casey is such a good fit.
