What They’re Saying: Draft Roundup

With the draft less than three weeks away, here’s what the national media are saying about the Eagles and the No. 4 pick:

Eagles Host Darius Slay, Draft’s Fastest CB

The Eagles added a pair of cornerbacks – Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher – in free agency, but they very well could look to add another in the first few rounds of this month’s draft.

Alabama’s Dee Milliner is the consensus top option on the board, but behind him, there are several quality corners who are expected to go in the first three rounds. One of them, Mississippi State’s Darius Slay, had an official visit with the Eagles, according to a report.

Eagles Work Out OT Lane Johnson

The Eagles worked out Oklahoma tackle Lane Johnson on Friday, a league source confirmed.

The 6-6, 303-pound Texas native was an all-state quarterback in high school and played the position some in junior college as well. He started out in Oklahoma as a tight end and defensive end before eventually transitioning to tackle. He played on the right side in 2011 and was primarily a left tackle last year, starting all but two games there.

Johnson ran a 4.72 40 at the Combine.

Ryans Insists That 3-4 Won’t Slow Him Down

DeMeco Ryans on Thursday was asked about the perception that he is not as effective in a 3-4 scheme as he is in a 4-3. The veteran linebacker cut in before the reporter had time to finish the question.

“Perception,” Ryans said with emphasis, followed by a laugh.

“It was a big perception that DeMeco doesn’t fit the 3-4. Whatever. I played in that defense. I played with the Texans in the 3-4 defense when we were the No. 1, No. 2 defense in the league. So if I didn’t fit in there, we wouldn’t have been that highly ranked.”

Three Thoughts On the Eagles’ Draft

Who will the Eagles take with the No. 4 pick? Will they take a chance on Geno Smith? With the draft three weeks away, here are my thoughts.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Early On, Players Embrace Change

DeSean Jackson and his teammates had grown accustomed to doing things a certain way at the NovaCare Complex.

From 1999 to 2012, it was the Andy Reid way.

But change has now arrived in the form of Chip Kelly. In the coming weeks and months, players will be asked to step out of their comfort zones and embrace change in a variety of football-related areas.

“First day, we had the team meeting, you could kind of sense the urgency,” Jackson said. “This is what it’s going to be, and it’s on you guys to get the information and dissect it and make the change and make the difference. One thing I can say, he’s letting us be professionals. We have to take accountability to do our jobs.”

Nnamdi: ‘I Wanted It To Work Out So Badly’

Philadelphia Eagles CB Nnamdi Asomugha.Nnamdi Asomugha isn’t making excuses for his two down years in Philadelphia, but insists that the dip in production had nothing to do with age.

The newly-minted Niner took part in a conference call with Bay Area reporters Wednesday night, and was asked why his two seasons with the Eagles did not work out.

“I tried my hardest for it to work out. I believed all the way up until the end that it was going to work out. I wanted it to work out so badly,” said Asomugha.

Joeckel, Milliner, Escobar To Visit Eagles

DeSean Jackson Hints At New Role With Kelly

For DeSean Jackson, change can be good.

The sixth-year wide receiver isn’t sure exactly how Chip Kelly plans on using him offensively, but he’s looking forward to finding out.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity,” Jackson said Wednesday. “Whatever the role is, hopefully being able to play multiple positions, being moved around is something I’m looking forward to as well, so I have a lot on my shoulders. I’ve got to get that playbook down. I’ve got to learn it and am looking forward to it.”
