Chip Kelly has been saying it since the day the Eagles hired him: He does not need a running quarterback.
Yet, many of us looked at his history, saw the team bring back Michael Vick and add Dennis Dixon, and figured the Eagles would target a mobile quarterback like EJ Manuel or Matt Scott in this draft.
Kelly, Howie Roseman and company tossed a curve-ball early on Saturday, giving up a seventh-round pick (No. 210) to move up to No. 98 and take USC’s Matt Barkley.
“We thought a lot of people were going to try to do the exact same thing,” Kelly explained. “We had Matt rated in the top 50 players in this draft. The fact that he was still there, we talked about all along that we were going to take value. There was no better value for us to open up today with than to take Matt.”

The Eagles are scheduled to make six picks today: No. 101 (fourth round), No. 136 (fifth round), No. 210 (seventh round), No. 212 (seventh round), No. 218 (seventh round) and No. 239 (seventh round).
The action gets started at noon.
Here’s a look at who’s still on the board
Here’s what Mike Mayock and other analysts had to say about the Eagles’ selections of Stanford tight end Zach Ertz and LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan.
The Eagles flipped to the defensive side of the ball in the third round, selecting LSU defensive tackle Bennie Logan.
Logan (6-2, 309) was a two-year starter at tackle for LSU. He finished the 2012 season with 45 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss and a pair of sacks. Playing alongside the likes of Michael Brockers, he was overshadowed for much of his time with the Tigers. But Chip Kelly and Howie Roseman identified a versatile lineman that they believe can be a three-down player.
“He can push the pocket from the inside,” said Kelly. “Really kind of a guy that we targeted. He was a second-round kid for us. We were just kind of holding our breath there as he fell. I think it will be a great fit for Billy Davis and what he is going to do with those guys.”
Chip Kelly’s Oregon squad was two games away from an undefeated season.
The No. 2 Ducks were hosting No. 13 Stanford in a prime-time game on Nov. 17.
With 6:28 left in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal’s offense took over at its own 22 yard line, trailing 14-7. Zach Ertz had been giving Oregon’s defense problems all game. And on this particular drive, the Ducks just had no answer for the 6-5 tight end. Ertz caught four balls for 53 yards, including the game-tying 10-yard touchdown with 1:35 left.
The play was originally ruled incomplete, but the officials changed their minds and gave Ertz the score.
Geno Smith fell to the Eagles at 35. If they wanted him, they had him. They didn’t want him.
At least not as much as Stanford tight end Zach Ertz — the 6-5, 249-pounder out of Alamo, California.
“He’s a mismatch nightmare,” said Chip Kelly. “If you get him isolated on a defensive back it’s very, very difficult to cover because of his size, but he’s also too athletic to put linebackers on.”
Lane Johnson told us on Friday that he wrestled bears “in his spare time” growing up. Only to say that he made the whole thing […]
Everything about James Evans’ appearance speaks to where he is from.
Evans is Lane Johnson’s step-dad, and he’s a rancher in a small East Texas town called Groveton.
During his first trip to Philadelphia, he brought his hometown with him, sporting a cowboy hat and a big belt buckle to complement his handle-bar mustache and Texas drawl. You get the sense he’s the kind of guy who has spent hundreds of hours entertaining friends, family members and strangers with stories from his past.
Join Tim and Sheil for a live chat during the second day of the NFL Draft. The Philadelphia Eagles are scheduled to have picks 35 (second round) and 67 (third round). The Jaguars are on the clock at 6:30.
When it comes to keeping up with Chip Kelly’s tempo, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops doesn’t anticipate Lane Johnson having any issues.
“Lane can go all day,” Stoops said. “He’s as well-conditioned and framed an athlete as we’ve ever had here. I’ll be surprised if he ever needs [to be] spelled out. He can go every snap. He’s used to that, and he’s been trained to do that.”
A couple notes and thoughts while we wait to see if Geno Smith is coming to Philly:
— Yesterday was Smith’s mother’s birthday. Obviously, it wasn’t as festive of an occasion as everyone had hoped. That was part of the reason why Smith planned on leaving New York City instead of sticking around for Day 2 of the draft, according to a source who was with the signal-caller Thursday night. He didn’t want his mom to be upset, and planned on going home with her and watching the draft there.
The Eagles are scheduled to pick at No. 35 (second round) and No. 67 (third round) tonight.
The draft kicks off at 6:30, and once again, we’ll host a live chat. Obviously, the picks could change, depending on trades, so here’s a list of potential targets, broken down by position.
How far has Geno Smith’s stock fallen? Who might the Eagles target at 35? And is Tyrann Mathieu on the team’s board? We explore in the latest Twitter Mailbag.
Analysts Mike Mayock, Jon Gruden, Greg Cosell and Mel Kiper Jr. weigh in on the Eagles’ selection of Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson with the No. 4 pick.
