Eagles Check Out DE/OLB Trevor Scott

The draft is over, but the Eagles will continue to look for ways to tweak their roster between now and September.

Yesterday, they had veteran defensive end/outside linebacker Trevor Scott in for a visit.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Mike Vick Versus the Ninja Stick

Trainer Tom Anderson wasn’t focused on who was responsible for the hits, but rather on how to limit the punishment when those hits came. So he made boxing — and the art of avoiding the brunt of the blow — a central part of the training regimen.

In one exercise, Anderson would stand about two feet away from the quarterback and swing a foamed “Ninja stick” at his head or upper body, forcing Vick to turn his shoulders and “get skinny” to minimize the impact. In another, Anderson put an elastic band around Vick’s ankles and would have him slide from side-to-side while punching at a stationary bag. (Anderson wouldn’t let Vick make contact with the bag. “We’re not tuning up your knuckles,” he told him, “we’re making you more elusive.”) Blow the whistle. Slide, punch, slide. Thirty seconds on, 30 seconds off.

Matt Barkley Looking To Make Immediate Impact

How will Chip Kelly make it work with Matt Barkley? The former USC quarterback is curious about that himself.

“I don’t exactly know what type of system it is going to be. I probably have similar questions that you do,” said Barkley in an interview with Jon Marks and Sean Brace on 97.5 The Fanatic. “Once we get into rookie camp next week I’ll have a better idea. But in terms of what style of quarterback he needs, I have heard him say multiple times both to the public and to me personally that he is going to make the personnel he has fit in the system. So without a doubt I have confidence that I can come in right away and make an impact, or just help the team in whatever way I can.

“I don’t think it matters what people say about me and what type of quarterback I am, I think Coach Kelly will make it work.”

Vick Whoops McCoy In 40-Yard Dash

Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy added some spirited competition to the Eagles’ workout today, facing off in a 40-yard dash. And there was no question about who crossed the finish line first.

Three Eagles Numbers That Matter

From Bennie Logan’s jersey choice to Matt Barkley’s deep ball to LeSean McCoy’s elusiveness, here are three Eagles numbers that matter.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Gamble’s Input ‘Really Valuable’

Chip Kelly wasn’t the only new face in the draft room for the Eagles this year.

In mid-February, the team brought Tom Gamble in as vice president of player personnel.

Asked about Gamble’s input, Kelly said, “It was really valuable. I knew Tommy from when he was with the 49ers because he was on our campus all the time at Oregon.”

On the Lane Johnson/Danny Watkins Comparison

Eagles fans never forget.

Just last week, during ESPN’s 30 for 30, Elway To Marino, a reader Tweeted me, saying he threw his remote across the room when footage was shown of the Eagles selecting running back Michael Haddix with the No. 8 pick in 1983. A graphic scrolled across the screen during the film, explaining that Haddix had the lowest yards-per-carry average (3.0) in the history of the NFL.

To make matters worse, of the 20 players selected after Haddix in the first round that year, four went on to have Hall of Fame careers: Bruce Matthews, Jim Kelly, Dan Marino and Darrell Green.

So when the Eagles used the No. 4 pick last week on Lane Johnson, some fans couldn’t help but take a stroll down memory lane and ask: Did the Birds just take another Danny Watkins?

NFL Looking Into Russell Shepard Claims

Wide receiver Russell Shepard raised some eyebrows when he told a Louisiana radio station that the Eagles had signed him to a free-agent contract before the draft was over, which would be against the rules. The NFL is checking it out.

“Yes, we are looking into it to determine the facts,” said league spokesman Greg Aiello.

Shepard said Chip Kelly reached out to him at the beginning of the sixth round and explained that the Eagles wanted him, but were short on picks after trading away a seventh-rounder to move up and grab Matt Barkley.

“I actually took myself off the draft board during the draft,” Shepard told the station. “Teams started calling me probably in the middle of the sixth round asking me ‘is it true that you’ve signed with a team already? The draft isn’t even over?’ and I actually got it out of the way before the draft was over.”

The Eagles, through a statement, said Shepard’s account is off the mark.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: The Chip Kelly Logic

Chip Kelly needed just a hand gesture to fend off the perceived complexity.

The Eagles had just used the 35th overall pick on Stanford tight end Zach Ertz even though they already had Brent Celek and James Casey on the roster.

Can you explain, a reporter asked Kelly, how you can make that work?

“Yeah. You go like that (holds three fingers in the air) and three tight ends go in the game,” he said, drawing laughs.

What They’re Saying About the Eagles

From 2014 mocks to more draft grades, here’s what the national media are saying about the Eagles.

Three Draft Leftovers From Kelly, Roseman

“Dumb people do dumb things,” says Chip Kelly. Here are three draft leftovers from the Eagles’ head coach and GM Howie Roseman.

No-22: What Zach Ertz Brings To the Eagles

Many of you have asked for All-22 breakdowns of the Eagles’ draft picks.

Unfortunately, the coaches’ tape is not available to the media or the public. So instead, we’ll use the TV footage from the great cut-ups that the fine folks of DraftBreakdown.com put together.

We’ll start with second-round pick Zach Ertz. I watched three of his games – against Cal, Notre Dame and Oregon. Below is what I saw.

Clearing Up the Reid-Barkley-Eagles Controversy

When the Eagles moved up in the fourth round to take Matt Barkley with the No. 98 pick, some wondered whether they were trying to jump ahead of Andy Reid and the Chiefs.

The Eagles originally had the 101st pick, while Kansas City had No. 99.

Reid was asked about the Chiefs potentially targeting Barkley and seemed to take a little jab at his former team.
