A warning about Chip Kelly and more. Here’s what the national media are saying about the Eagles this week.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: The ‘Compelling’ 2004 Squad

Today, we take a trip down memory lane and remember a team that will either bring a smile to your face or elicit tears from your eyes: the 2004 Eagles.

ESPN.com is doing a series on the five most compelling NFL teams since 2000, and the 2004 Birds, led by Brian Dawkins, Donovan McNabb, Terrell Owens, Brian Westbrook and company came in at No.3, behind only the 2010 Brett Favre-led Vikings and the 16-0 New England Patriots (2007).

Kelly Gets 18-Month ‘Show Cause’ Penalty From NCAA

The NCAA today announced sanctions against Oregon for use of a recruiting service provider “who became a representative of the university’s athletics interests, to assist the school with the recruitment of multiple prospective student-athletes.”

Of interest to this crowd is that Chip Kelly was hit with an 18-month show-cause penalty.

What does that mean? If Kelly wants to return to the college ranks within the next 18 months, he and the new school would have to appear before the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions and explain why he should be allowed to do so. The school would also have to detail how it planned on monitoring him, and the program would be subject to harsher penalties were he to break the rules again.

Will Kelly Run a Physical Training Camp?

Jason Avant’s theory makes sense.

Chip Kelly has preached competition for months now. In late July, when the team returns for training camp, the new head coach will resume the player evaluation process to find the best 53. While he’s certainly conscious of taking care of the players from a health standpoint, Kelly will want to see how they compete with the pads on.

“It has to be in some sorts, especially when you have a new coach,” Avant said, when asked if he’s expecting a physical camp. “I think it’s a tone-setter. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be physical. But at the same time, Coach Kelly is very, very cautious about overdoing things. So we’ll see which angle he’ll take. We don’t know. Hopefully it’s physical because we need that. But yet, at the same time, enough where the guys can recover and recuperate.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: What They’ve Learned About Chip

Jeremy Maclin held his third annual football camp Tuesday in West Deptford, N.J.

He was joined by former Missouri teammates and current NFL players Sean Weatherspoon, Danario Alexander and others.

Maclin also had a couple of his current Eagles teammates Jason Avant and Michael Vick stop by.

I asked all three players one simple question: What do you know about Chip Kelly now that you didn’t know when he was first hired as the Eagles’ head coach?

Here are their answers.

Vick Revisits ‘Starter’ Comments, Says Kelly Has Team’s Attention

When we last heard from Michael Vick, he was walking off the field at the NovaCare Complex following the Eagles’ final mini-camp of the spring.

At the time, Vick admitted it was tough splitting reps and said he hoped Chip Kelly would name a starter before training camp so that he wouldn’t have to answer any more questions about the QB situation.

Today, while making an appearance at Jeremy Maclin’s football camp at RiverWinds Community Center in West Deptford, N.J., Vick said he didn’t expect his comments to create such a stir.

“I was very surprised because I didn’t try to say it in a derogatory way where I felt like Coach should make a decision or there’s pressure on him to make a decision,” Vick said. “I was just asked a question, and I answered it the best way that I could. But Coach is totally involved in our team and what we’ve got going on and what needs to be done. Like I said, we’re all going to sit back and make sure that we do exactly what he asks us to do, regardless of who’s out there on the field.”

Q&A With Author Of ‘The Tao Of Chip Kelly’

Mark Saltveit is the author of a new book titled, The Tao of Chip Kelly: Lessons from America’s Most Successful Coach.

He recently joined us for a phone conversation to discuss the book and the new Eagles’ head coach.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Kelce, Not QB, Will Make Protection Calls

When last year began, Jason Kelce was in charge of making the protection calls at the line of scrimmage for the Eagles.

When Kelce went down in Week 2 and Dallas Reynolds took over, he became the new man in charge.

But before the Week 9 matchup against the Saints, Michael Vick had a chat with the coaches and told them he wanted the responsibility back. Andy Reid and company went along with the suggestion.

Now, as the Eagles forge ahead with Chip Kelly, the offense is going back to doing things the way it did at the start of 2012. During the spring, the center was put in charge of setting the protection.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: ‘I Don’t Want To Leave,’ Says Maclin

Jeremy Maclin doesn’t plan on letting his contract become a distraction, but he knows exactly what’s at stake in the coming months.

“I’m anxious,” Maclin said Saturday at LeSean McCoy’s charity softball game in Lancaster. “I’m ready for the season to start. This is a big year for me personally with my contract coming up and everything. So I’m just looking forward to it.”

McCoy Tries To Put Off-Field Incidents Behind Him

Jeremy Maclin has seen his friend LeSean McCoy go through ups and downs during his first four seasons in the league.

In 2011, McCoy totaled 1,624 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns, earning All-Pro honors. But he dealt with injuries and a banged-up offensive line in 2012, averaging 4.2 yards per carry, his lowest number since his rookie season.

Meanwhile, after the 4-12 campaign ended, McCoy made headlines for unflattering reasons – first engaging in a public Twitter fight with the mother of his son and then being sued for allegedly assaulting a woman on a party bus.

McCoy is a few weeks shy of his 25th birthday, and the goals now are clear: Get back to being one of the league’s elite running backs and avoid negative press off the field.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: LeSean On QBs, Chip Kelly

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.LeSean McCoy‘s celebrity softball game, which raises money to help fight ALS, is this Saturday in Lancaster. (Details here.) The Eagles’ running back called into 97.5 The Fanatic this week to promote the event and of course talk a little ball.

McCoy was asked about the quarterback situation and whether he, like Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson, wants more clarity when it comes to the depth chart.

“The thing about Michael Vick is, he’s a 12-year vet, he’s put his work in in the league, and his voice means a lot,” said McCoy.
