Today marks the beginning of a new era of Eagles football, and here at Birds 24/7, that means it’s time to try something new.
At the beginning of each training camp, I like to take a look at the roster, position-by-position. It helps me figure out where the true battles will take place, how the final 53 might shape up, etc.
This week, 90 men will take the field at the NovaCare Complex. Some are hoping to be Pro Bowlers; others would be happy with a spot on the practice squad.
Keeping that in mind, allow me to introduce the Kapadia Training Camp Rankings (yes, the name needs work). The idea is simple. Below you will find a five-tiered rating system.
Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of Birds 24/7. Amazing how much has changed since we launched.
Here is an excerpt from our first post:
The Eagles are coming off a devastatingly disappointing season and the head coach, ring-less for 13 years and counting, is in full fight-out-of-the-corner mode. Joe Banner has been exiled, the organization is potentially on the verge of a significant restructuring but no worries, says the quarterback, the Eagles have what it takes to create a dynasty. You get the feeling, one way or another, something big is about to go down.
We all know how it played out. The Eagles went 4-12, Andy Reid was fired after 14 years of service, and Chip Kelly got the gig following a roller-coaster coaching search. Now, a lot about the team is unrecognizable. The roster, the staff, the philosophy, practices, even the training camp location has changed. The old guard has been replaced by the new school.
Is the new school legit? That question will keep the Eagles in the national spotlight for the foreseeable future. That, and a quarterback competition/controversy that could ultimately involve three different players.
It is an amazing time to follow this team. There are endless story lines and so many questions to be answered. And it all starts now. We’re excited to get it going.
The Eagles and first-round pick Lane Johnson have agreed to terms on a four-year deal, the team announced Saturday night.
Chip Kelly on the one number he pays attention to in the box score, plus some extended thoughts on the Eagles’ use of analytics and math.
Even though he released a rap video earlier this week, DeSean Jackson will not join Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports.
Instead, he has signed on with agent Joel Segal, according to Liz Mullen of the Sports Business Journal. Segal also reps Jackson’s teammate, Michael Vick.
Eagles President Don Smolenski sat down with a group of reporters Thursday afternoon to talk about the upcoming training camp.
Some takeaways:

DeSean Jackson didn’t want to answer at first, but ultimately he decided to offer his prediction when asked who he thinks the Eagles’ starting quarterback will be.
“In my opinion, honestly, I don’t want to be put on the spot, I know y’all gonna do me like that, but Michael Vick’s got a lot of confidence in himself. He’s been there, going on 12 years in the NFL, I think he’ll get the job,” Jackson said during an ESPN interview. “Nick Foles is a great, great talent coming in from Arizona, actually a Pac-12 guy. He has the hype, he has the skills as well too. Going into camp, I think Michael Vick will probably be the starter, but we still don’t know. I think Chip Kelly’s gonna keep everybody honest and keep everybody open.”
So far, the fans in Philadelphia have greeted Chip Kelly with open arms.
“They’ve been great,” said the new Eagles’ head coach. “It’s obvious they’re extremely passionate about the Eagles. That’s evident no matter where you go. It’s been awesome. But we haven’t played a game yet either, so that could change.”
During his four-year run at Oregon, Kelly suffered just seven losses in 53 games. While anything’s possible, there’s a good chance he’ll suffer that many defeats in his first season in the NFL.
So how is that going to sit with the new Eagles’ head coach?
“Every day you go out there you don’t think, ‘Hey, we’re gonna win 46 out of 53,’ ” he said. “It’s a competition every single day, so I don’t think that way, that ‘Hey, I’m not used to losing.’ We’ve got the utmost respect for whoever we’re gonna compete against. I know it’s extremely difficult to win in this league. You just look at everybody’s record over the history of the game. It is a different game from that standpoint. But that’s just part of it. That’s the challenge. You look at it and kind of embrace it. You’re excited about it. Every single Sunday, you better bring your A game or you’re going to be in trouble.”
