Chip: Foles Has Crack In Clavicle

Chip Kelly confirmed that Nick Foles has a “crack” in his clavicle. An MRI this afternoon will help determine whether the quarterback needs surgery and how long he will be sidelined.

It is Mark Sanchez‘s show for the time being, and Kelly told reporters at his day-after press conference that he is very comfortable with the veteran quarterback at the controls.

“I feel great about Mark. We’ve felt great about him all along. I always say we need to have two quarterbacks and the chance to get him in here, I think he’s done a great job in our system,” he said. “I thought he played outstanding in the preseason and showed no rust or anything when he got in there yesterday against Houston. We feel real confident. We obviously feel very bad for Nick that he’s out but I feel very confident in Mark if we have to go in that direction.”

Kelly acknowledged that DeMeco Ryans has an Achilles injury but did not provide further details. The belief is that Ryans tore his Achilles Sunday and will be lost for the season.

Todd Herremans left the game in the second half with an ankle sprain. Kelly said no determination has been made yet as to whether Herremans will be able to continue to play with his torn biceps.

“When they got inside on him, his inside [left] arm is the one he hurt and he sometimes wasn’t as strong as he normally would have been but I thought he battled and played his tail off,” said Kelly. “As he told me on the sideline when he sprained his ankle, he said ‘I’m a one-armed, one-legged guy now.’ He was great. He knew when he wasn’t at the top of his game in terms of where he was and that he couldn’t go and was the one that came up and told us what the deal was.”

Matt Tobin and Andrew Gardner would be the two candidates for the starting right guard spot if Herremans can’t go.

Evan Mathis, meanwhile, is poised for his return. Kelly expects him to suit up Monday night against Carolina.

“He’s looked good for a couple weeks here,” said Kelly. “I think he’s just been chomping at the bit. I know he really wanted to play yesterday but just because of how the [short-term IR] rules are set up he wasn’t able to come off until this week. I think he’ll be ready to play this week.”
